Thanks, Tony. I have that War Diary link somewhere but couldn’t find it.

All that the War Diary for that day confirms is 1 Officer and 7 ORs killed, 1 Officer and 18 ORs wounded. The Officer in point named as 2nd Lt VC Robinson, as per my earlier CWGC Roll.

    Best,

    Steve.

    Hi Russ

It helps to provide as much information as you have for instance posting his CWGC details helps others find out where he died and therefore what part of the world needs to be covered

One important document you need is his service record - if you do not already have them I would suggest you do - the link to obtain them (official records are ONLY available from the MOD) is Request records of deceased service personnel

Thank you . Was hoping to find a little bit more info on what happened on that day . Maybe i will have to pay the £30 fee. Do you know how detailed service records are ?

    Evening Russ,

The reason why your great uncle’s service records are important is that they will tell you who he served with, when and where. For example, his service number is from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment block of numbers - 5094001 - 5172000.

So, when and where did he serve with them, and when and where did he serve with the Dorsetshire Regiment, etc.

The 1st Bn Dorsetshire Regiment was attacking Point 462 slightly south east of Agira, Sicily, on 20 July 1943.

Your great uncle is included in the Roll of Honour in the Battalion history: Three Assault Landings (Bredin).

    Best,

    Steve.

Thank you so much . So he was a bit of a hero then ?. My grandad would have been so proud.
Can i ask how you found this out ? I have googled the three assault landings and books are coming up.
Three Assault Landingsthe Story of the 1st Bn. the Dorsetshire Regiment in Sicily, Italy and N.W. Europe by Bredin, Col A. E. C.: Naval and Military Press Ltd 9781845749675 PAP - Books2Anywhere
I have found amongst my late grandads belongings lots of pictures of war but i think they might be ww1 as there are lots of by planes.
I also have a letter from the Mod stating that he was killed in action.
Hope to find even more out

I think that Samuel was the same man commemorated on the Birmingham Transport Ground War Memorial. I've written a book about the First World War deaths called Trams to Trenches. I'm now writing a book about the Second World Deaths and Samuel is the only Jeffery commemorated on the Hall of Memory site.

The Daily Telegraph (behind a pay wall) has an obituary for Denis Bounsall, a Private who served as a unarmed stretcher-bearer, who won the DCM for his actions in Sicily. He became a painter and designer and maker of stained glass, one of his designs (below) is in the Keep Military Museum in Dorchester and the other in the town hall at Asnelles, close to where 1 Dorset landed on D-Day. From: Denis Bounsall, bandsman and stretcher-bearer who displayed extraordinary courage in Sicily and Normandy – obituary
