I was wondering if anyone here could shed any light on this. It is a piece of graffiti that I discovered on a wall in the old Napoleonic Drop Redoubt fort, part of the Western Heights defences at Dover.

I have recorded a few graffitis from other Regiments, such as the Irish Guards, 5th Dorsets and 11th Buffs, but we know they they were all stationed up at the Grand Shaft Barracks and other local areas during 1940-41.

The Welsh Guards name is, however, an enigma, I've found no trace of the 1st Battalion being stationed at Dover from reading the War Diary in the other thread and wondered if anyone could help. I'd put money on this being dated early war, 39-41, as virtually all the other graffiti is from that period.

    Many thanks.

1 WG were in Gib before going to France and then after France they appear to be in Colchester and Elstree from June 1940. Some may have had a short stay in Dover though before moving away from the coast after Op Dynamo as what was left of the battalion was evacuated on several ships. If they were evacuated on a Destroyer they would have landed at Dover.

Thanks very much. Yes, I suppose he could have been temporary shelter in Dover after being evacuated from Dunkirk, it's certainly an explanation that fits.
