This painting was done by David Pentland. Does anyone know what photographs this painting was based on? I am seeking more information on the camouflage painted Sherman's of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. http://www.military-art.com/mall/more.php?ProdID=164 "Anzio, Italy, February 1944 by David Pentland. (GL) Replacements from 1st Battalion Irish Guards and Sherman tanks of the 46th Royal Tank Regiment move through the debris of Anzio town towards their jump-off positions for the Battle of Campoleone Station."
Hi I believe the painting to be based on a number of photos archived within IWM series for The British Army in Italy. So an amalgamation of images... IG troops were photographed in the same poses but on the same open road on 25 January ... http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/459...lion-irish-guards-jan-1944-mar-1944/?p=542149 . http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205207216 "A Sherman tank of 46th Royal Tank Regiment supporting Irish Guardsmen north of Anzio, 25 January 1944." This image doesn't seem to be available online from the IWM site, but it was published in Irish Guards History. Note 2nd, 3rd, 4th men are 'in step'. the same types of buildings ... in April 45; note the position of the leading bearer's feet, otherwise the IG features from the earlier photo http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204781 "Stretcher bearers pass Sherman tanks in Portomaggiore, 19 April 1945." . http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204786 "Sherman and Churchill tanks in the main square of Portomaggiore, Italy, 20 April 1945." ...there this one with distinctive camo paint http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204309 "A Sherman tank comes ashore at Salerno, September 1943." . http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204627 "Sherman tanks advance during the assault on the Gustav Line at Cassino, 15 May 1944." others found for 46RTR http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204500 http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204501 http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204614 http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204497 http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204496
Same photographer but in Tripoli ( as the one above http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204309 ) http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205204093 "Newly-arrived Sherman tanks on the quayside in Tripoli, 15 March 1943."
You're welcome. Your tank camo query might attract more attention if you amend the title to include those terms (Edit, Full editor) - I know the painting says 1st IG, but they were infantry. The reference to 46 RTR may not necessarily apply either, i.e. going by the lack of unit recorded on info blurbs for the photos taken in Portomaggiore [hr] Off topic, but I thought I'd mention it because of your username. This from 1st IG war diary while in North Africa http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/45968-war-diary-1st-battalion-irish-guards-jan-1943-dec-1943/?p=541541
