1940 newspaper report of air duel over Gloucestershire.

    A short report taken from the Cheltenham Graphic published November 30th 1940 detailing two Hurricanes and a Junkers 88 air duel above Coates near Cirencester.

    24 November 1940: 3.(F)/123 Junkers Ju88A-5 (0451). Shot down by W/C Oliver and Sgt M. Parafinski of No.308 Squadron during reconnaissance mission to Wolverhampton, Birmingham, and Coventry and crashed at Coates Manor, 3 miles south-west of Cirencester, 3.25 p.m. BO Lt Herbert Hollstein, FF Fw Helmut Schwingshackl, BF Gefr Hans Gran, and BS Uffz Gustav Koch all killed. Aircraft 4U+HL 100% write-off.
    Representative pieces gathered from the site by Severnside Aviation Society include a parachute release buckle.

    Thanks Peter that's very interesting information I'm fairly certain the crew were buried at Coates.

    Yes, the crew was buried in graves G1 - G4 at St Matthews Churchyard at Coates on 27 November 1940. Gustav KOCH was the only one able to be named at the time but the others were all subsequently identified as per the attached. They are all now reinterred in the Soldatenfriedhof at Cannock Chase Block 2 Graves 204 - 207.
