    201st Guards Brigade, 5th Division, 10 Corps
19114 Lieutenant-Colonel, Acting Brigadier Richard Beale Rous COLVIN, H.Q. 201st Guard Brigade, GRENADIER GUARDS

On 21st January Brigadier COLVIN led his Brigade into action in the TRIMONSUOLI area, the clearing and retention of which was vital to the establishment of a firm bridgehead across the River GARIGLIANO.

German resistance was both stubborn and active, and the nature of the ground is such that the functions of reconnaissance, contol and command were difficult and hazardous; the enemy possessed good and close observation from several directions, over almost the entire area.

201st GUARDS BRIGADE seized the initial objectives allotted to them, held them till 29th January and then carried out a further and most successful attack to deepen the positions. The fresh objectives thus taken were held, despite further fierce counter-attacks, till 3rd February, when the Brigade were relieved. During the whole period under review enemy shelling and mortaring in this area was persistent and accurate.

Much of the credit for these achievements is due to the energy, drive and personal courage of Brigadier COLVIN.

By his apparent disregard of difficulties and dangers he set a magnificent example to all ranks, and I can personally vouch for his gallantry and imperturbability. His conduct and bearing throughout this operation were admirable and were an inspiration to all under his command.

    Signed Major-General, Commanding 5th Division

    Granted an Immediate D.S.O.
