    Hi,

I am researching a man who served in the 18 AA Bty, RA with the BEF from 27/4/1940 to 26/5/1940.

Does anyone have a copy of the unit diary for this brief period?

Following evacuation from Dunkirk it looks like this unit became the 18/4 AA Regt.

    Can anyone help?

    Regards

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff

You would have been better posting this in the 1940 section ;)

Anyway, are we talking Heavy or Light AA Battery?

    Cheers
    Andy

    Hi Andy,

It doesn't say in his service record, just "18 AA Bty". But on the same date it also mentions "18/6".

On the 29th June 1940 an entry says that this became the "18/4 AA Rgt"

Does this make it a bit clearer (as mud no doubt!)

There was a 18 Heavy AA Battery in France but not sure where the 4 comes into play. I thought it might have been regiment but 18 Battery wasn't with this regiment.

I know that he was posted directly from his training regiment overseas to join the BEF on the 27th April 1940 where he was assigned to "Base Det". On the 9th May 1940 he was posted to the afore mentioned 18 AA Bty with which unit he remained until July 1941.

Do you know anything of the movements of the 18 Heavy AA Battery in France as I'm assuming they must have been one and the same?

The 1st AA Brigade,s, 6 HAA Regt RA, had an 18 Heavy AA Bty (18/6) in France with the BEF, Nov1939- May1940
They then went to the 4th HAA Regt, 18 HAA Bty (18/4) June1940-1942

Do you have a copy of his service records? Rob's post creates a whole new ball game and the service records will confirm his units 100%

    Hi Andy and Rob,

The details in Rob's post tie in exactly with the details from the service record.

Thanks very much lads, really appreciate your help!
