Due to illness, I have had little time or energy to devote to this matter however, I am happy to report that i have recently discovered that Frank Faulkner was the Chairman of the Torbay branch of the Dunkirk Veterans Association and made many visits to the commemorations

  2. Hi I know this may be a long shot but my grandfather served with the 17th in Normandy as a NCO and was involved with building of the first baily bridge , I am just wondering if anyone has any information on him James ( Jim, jimmy ) McIntyre From Scotland.
I realise its a long shot but I can only hope.
    Thank you

I'm looking for some information on our Great Uncle, Sapper Sidney George Hayman. He was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, with the service number 1874724. Sidney George Hayman was part of the 17 Field Company and died on 1st June 1940. He was 22 years old at the time of his death. He is commemorated at the Dunkirk Memorial, Column 25, in France. If anyone has any images of the 17th prior to this or any information on the days leading up to the 1st June 1940 or the day itself I would be so grateful. Steve Hayman.

Well it looks like I’m a little bit late to this party but anyway that’s by the by. My Grandad Jim Horner served with the 17th Field Company from 1940 to 1945. He was previously in the 253 Field Coy from 1939 up to the evacuation from Dunkirk and his return to England.

He’s pictured here reclining on the bonnet of their half-track on page 112 of the book Monty’s Iron Sides along with Sergeant Faulkner who I believe must have had copies of the photograph made and given to the men as my Grandad passed it on to me.

He often talked about Sergeant Faulkner and Lieutenant Crush who is mentioned many times in this thread. He was their reconnaissance sapper and spent a lot of his time with them as he put it “doing all sorts of jobs, up at front with infantry, laying mines, all sorts of jobs lad”.

My Grandad (I deliberately spell it that way) passed away in 2009 aged 90 and left me with some very fond memories our chats and his first hand

    Hi all,

I’m finally getting around to putting some time into continuing my research into 17th Fd Coy RE as I got a bit side-tracked with what I was doing for 84 Fd Coy RE (my grandfather served with both regiments during WW2).

I’m hoping to gather as many individual's stories, info, photos etc from relatives of those who served with 17th Fd Coy RE, with the aim of hopefully producing something similar to what I did with 84 Fd Coy RE.

Please get in touch if you are willing and able to assist. I’m hoping that some of those who have been involved in this thread over the years are still active on here.

    All the best
    Marc
