A good account of endurance and determination to survive.

There was a similar story recalled on Look North TV last night when only two men survived after 50 days at sea.The two survivors were remembered by their relatives at a get together in Hull where the two had connections.

Off hand, I believe the record for survival is held by a Chinese seaman who was the only survivor after well over a 100 days at sea.I think he drifted to off the coast of Brazil and was picked up very near to where the Amazon flows into the Atlantic.

His name was Poon Lim from the Benlomond who survived for 133 days, living partly upon the provisions stowed on the raft and partly on fish and seagulls which he occasionally caught. He was eventually picked up by a family of Brazilian fishermen and was in the last stages of exhaustion and was taken to the Beneficiencia Portuguese Hospital at Belem where he reported the loss of the Benlomond.

Unofficially it was two Indian crewmembers, Thakar Miah and Mohamed Aftab from the Fort Longueuil who managed to survive on a raft for 134 days and who were eventually captured by the Japanese and taken prisoners on 1st February 1944, when the raft drifted ashore on Sumatra. Both men survived their captivity and were able to recount their remarkable story after the war.
