Ah ok, I hadn't realised you were. I'm meeting one of my uncles today and will see if he has any other pointers to help me when looking and to arrange a date to visit the museum also. Thanks for showing an interest Simon.
I do a lot for my Regiments History, but sadly part two orders were lost or thrown away, so no names will be available that way, unless Regimental HQ has them and not told the Regiments Archivists!!! Sadly that name does not show in Squadron orders, These usually only mentioned KIA or WIA, I have to look through Soldier On to see if he is mentioned there, but that name does not show in other Veteran accounts. I would phone and ask the museum what it holds, rather than a visit, may save time.
Thanks Simon, my primary reason for going to the museum was to get hold of a copy of the war diary but i'd also like a look round all the same. I'm also thinking of visiting Stoke at some point as there may be some clues amongst the various photos and other assorted documents they hold there (pot luck i accept but you never know). If i can get that stroke of luck and pin him down to a particular squadron then it will really help understand his journey through Italy but I don't hold out all that much hope. I've also read Soldier On which was really enjoyable, again no mention of my granddad but that would have been pretty lucky to be honest.
Hi Simon Wrong war, but my great grandfather was in the 16th from 1905 until he was invalided out after being wounded on 13th September 1914 at Ciry-Salsogne. If I can be of any help to the archive please give me a shout. Regards Mark snapper35 hotmail.com
Thanks Simon, I look forward to hearing from them. He was ARP in WW2. A proud Old Contemptible. L/5493 Sgt Frederick Charles Crame, D Squadron. Scout & Riding Instructor. Taught Gough's daughter to ride incidentally.
Memorial to 16/5 Lancers unveiled in Florence today. https://twitter.com/EdLlewellynFCDO/status/1578725314745991168?s=20&t=WiVco1oEstcncFdWdveA4Q
MY old Colonel Radford MC led the fundraising, cost nigh on 10k , Italian marble. Looks like they had a good time and a good turnout.
How did you get on? My father was also in the 16th/5th Lancers, in B Echelon, and I read 'Soldier On' with similar hopes to you, but alas. It certainly helped with a lot of other details and filled in some gaps for me though. I also have two other recommended books which feature the 16th/5th - Mailed Fist (Ken Ford) and Death or Glory (Kevin Shannon)
Is the rest of this war diary available, and if so where can I find it? My grandfather Lt. P.C.Bull is mentioned and I’m trying to work out what he did in the war.
Nicholas. If you want the WDs then you need to get in touch with Gary Tankard on this site. He goes to the National Archives all the time. Regards Frank
Than you for the lead, I will get in contact with him. He stayed in the army for quite a while and was CO from 61-64
