    From my notes:
    Anzio: "The Saint"
    12th to 29th February 1944
The 67th Field Regiment now came under 56 Division recently arrived to take over the sea flank of the British Sector.
The Regiment under direct support of the 67th was the 36th Regiment of Combat Engineers (US) who had relieved the Loyal’s ten days previously.
Whilst they were not infantry they had experience of this before, having been called upon to defend the landing at Salerno, when the Germans almost drove the Americans into the sea. Fortunately the men got along fine, the Americans were keen and learned much about Infantry work from the British and to trust in their methods of close artillery support.

The American 36th Combat Engineers went on the offensive on 25th Feb
Their OC Colonel Stanley was a great admirer of General Templer (nicknamed “The Saint”).
A cool brave soldier, he wandered about the lines on his own at night.
General Templar wanted prisoners from the coast front telling him stories of successful British patrols.
A plan was then hatched for a fighting patrol to attack enemy machine gun posts that had appeared on their side of the river.
The attack went in at 0200 it was not a success with two officers and several GI’s wounded.
Their morale was lowered but while they didn't want to admit it, they were not trained as infantry and hoped to do better next time.

March 2nd The local patrols having failed, a group of British Commando’s were brought in by General Templer for patrols in the coastal sector. These were real film type Commandos (from 40 Commando Royal Marines) in cap comforters, sweaters and gym shoes. They raided a house 1500yds inside enemy lines, shot up some Bosche and brought back an anti tank gunner who had been deployed waiting for his gun since 16th Feb.

March 3rd the third battalion of the Engineers sent out a “must succeed” patrol to bring back a prisoner dead or alive. Returned empty handed but an American gunner who had been taken prisoner earlier in the campaign walked straight through the German and our lines without being challenged. He said he didn't think much was going on the other side of the Moletta, the only thing he had seen were some officers dining in a house which was unfortunately out of range.

14th March 1944 56 Div were relieved by 5 Div.
General Templer left Anzio much to the regret of Col Stanley but not to his men.
At last the Engineers took a prisoner, a Parachute Engineer Officer complete with maps and plans,
who had lost his way while in command of a unit preparing defences across the river.
They also captured a deserter. Active Patrolling is discontinued.

I see the Adenauer matter does not appear on Wikipedia, so an amendment will be made citing the two sources given here. Well done Charley. Updated Wiki 19/3/2023.
