Maj Gen V EVELEGH has commanded this division with outstanding success during the battle of the SANGRO 29 Nov - 1 Dec '43.
It is mainly due to his drive, tactical flair and inspiration that his division carried out this operation with conspicuous success and few casualties.
During the period he was constantly ?well ?forward, in touch with leading brigades and was thus able to take correct tactical decisions.
This division has complete faith in his leadership

Axe presented to Maj-Gen Vyvyan EVELEGH 78th Div.

I recently purchased a 1942 WW11 Ariel WNG Motorcycle the previous owner who is now in nursing care, had a small museum of WW11 items. As I was leaving the owners daughter told me it came with the bike and if I did not want it to do her a favour and take it to the nearest dump. It seems unbelievable that some people even in these enlightened times consider these items rubbish.
Hanging on the wall surrounded by various sheaved bayonets and machete's was this French punishment axe. I'm guessing it is a late 19thC copy. As a boilermaker I can tell you it took a very skilled Smith to make this. I immediately spotted the the two protrusions were a later addition. On reading the inscription one can be fairly sure these were added in the REME workshops to resemble the 78th Infantry insignia before being presented the Major General V Evelegh.
I just though it may be of interest to members of this forum.

Some might like to see the Motorcycle as well.

Think the title needs modifying to attract more attention.

Perhaps include the motorcycle in it along with the Battle Axe.

Just one thought enters my devious little mind.
If you got that free with a motorbike what would you get with a Tank!

I have discovered since posting that the axe is actually a German/Austrian Goosewing axe and was correct in my assumption that it had been altered to resemble the the 78th insignia. It is large at 3.6kgs, why the German Army would have one in Tunis is a mystery as it is a wood working tool.

I mean, to me it's the sort of thing that should be in a divisional museum! Or it would be prominently displayed in the museum of one of the regiments in that brigade.

A super sentiment Chris but one of effects of "options for change", disbandments, mergers, over here in the last forty or so years is that many regimental messes, storage facilities, and even museums have just disappeared, along with content of same too.

A great shame, but the way of the modern defence world.

Kind regards, don't mention the silver, always,
