Just checking if there was new information about this soldier - and this is new to me. Thanks D for posting it. I have some information about his death, and I hope you don't mind it being posted here, too.

The Allied push up through Italy had reached Macchiagodena in the Apennine mountains, and (from The history of the 58th) "[it] was decided that the village could only be captured by clearing the enemy from the mountains that overlooked the road to it". On the 30th October 1943 the attack started. (From The Fifth British Division 1939-1945) "[T]here followed some particularly dogged fighting for several rocky pinnacles, against which enemy shelling, now becoming quite prolific, was very effective. The hard ground made it quite impossible to dig in, and the sole means of protection was to build up Sangar-like shelters, as in the fighting on the north-west frontier of India in pre-war days."

From 7 Cheshire war diary (W0169/10192):

    S. Elena 30 : During the afternoon 10 Pl of C Coy under command of 2 Northants was attacking MACCIAGODENA [sic] when it came under heavy mortar fire causing many casualties. Those suffered by 10 Pl were Lieutenant HJ WORLEY, 4126860 Cpl McMahon J, 4134076 Pte Burgham G and 4127927 Pte Tydd J killed..."
