I have been asked by a friend for information on 40 Battery 14th (West Lothian Royal Scots) LAA Regiment RA. I've had no sucess so far finding anything other than some data concerning their activity in the Western Desert, Tunis and at Cassino.

This interest is based on a very scant diary (dates & places only) written by her father which she unearthed after her fathers death. He was in 40 Battery from 1942 - 1945 and she wants to fill in the blanks with any details or photos that are available. I know she is going to get access to the Unit War Diary.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

During the Sicily invasion the 40th LAA R.A. were in the 51st Highland Division - which went home from there for the D day landings - so for the 14th West Lothians to be at cassino they must have been detached from the 51st at or about Sicily - it would appear that they served in the 51st from El Alamein in Oct '42 - Aug '43

    Hi

My Dad was in the 39th Battery 14th LAA Reg RA
I got a summary of the war diary from the Royal Artillery Museum and that was helpful.
Also does she have a copy of his service records- I got a copy of my Dad, which I am posting on here to find out more and they were a good source of information.
There is also heaps of information on Bofors on this site, including photos and movies which are worth looking at

    regards

    Robert

There is nothing in the narrative about this Regiment in Routledge's 'History of Anti-Aircraft Artillery 1914-55'. Only a few scant locations and movements as part of 12th AA Brigade in NA and Italy, plus a few Orders of Battle lists.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I have transcribed the diary from 24 March 1942 when Harry Cummins was posted from 6LAA Battery (Coleraine) to 40 LAA Battery for the remainder of the war.

There's no personal detail or photos, just dates and locations.

My friend has his pay book details and part of the War Diary is on the way.

Hi there Hand to hand 22. My great uncle served 140th Bty, 40 lt AA Regt. Sadly he was killed around the start of December 1942. Don't suppose you have any diary references for around that time?

    Hi Gunner74

You have to watch between battery and regiment, with all those numbers it is easy to get confused, you are after the 40th regiment, he was commenting on the 40th Battery 14th Regiment
