Rifleman Murphy was killed along with 8 other London Irishmen in the attack on Casa Spinello, south of Monte Spaduro.

    Stupid question

CWGC have him as a Rifleman - the memorial has him as Pte

    Why the difference?

I can only assume that he signed on as a Private and when issued with a General Service Number..but when he was assigned to 2 LIR, in 1944 most probably, he most certainly became a Rifleman..and is thus stated on the LIR's War Memorial... and similarly is "strangely" noted as a Royal Ulster Rifleman on the Memorial inconsistent with Rfn McClatchey being shown as a London Irish Rifleman.. both serving with the LIR when they were killed in Italy.

    best wishes

Possibly details were 'as submitted' by family etc, to committee in charge of adding the WW2 panels.

I think that could explain the LIR/RUR difference as well.
