HI, I'm looking for any other info on Private King, he was apparently killed by a German Mine at Montrose - I'm assuming an aerial mine, can anyone add anything in terms of which unit of the Pioneer Corps he was with? he was 1 of 7 members of the Corps killed that day, not sure if all in the same incident. Thanks Alistair

Alistair, I don't know which Unit, but it may well have been raised in Leeds? These are the other Pioneer Corps men killed on the 13/2/41. Burn, Flynn (Born Eire), King, and Whitaker all came from Leeds. Sewed was from Bradford. Margison from Doncaster. The Yorkshire Post 28th May 1940 published a call for volunteers for a Leeds Company of the Pioneer Corps, for men aged 35 to 50.
Thanks for the replies so far, from CWGC I also had 13002481 Arthur Walter France who died the same day, he was from Ferrybridge so again Yorkshire neck of the woods, he was 39 so again a possible tie with the recruitment call. Alistair
Alistair, This is the Pioneer Corps Captain that signed the death register enteries for King and Whitaker. They were billeted at 1 Hudson Square Montrose. Both men died of multiple injuries at the Royal Infirmary.
CWGC grave registration doc for Pte Sewed says he was in 143 Company Pioneer Corps. Sjt William "Billy" Flynn received a DCM in WW1, more info here William Flynn (British Army soldier) - Wikipedia in the webpage it says "The night Billy died he was supposed to be off duty, but had swapped with a friend who wanted to go out that night. Thus it was whilst he was on guard duty that night (13-Feb-41) a German plane dropped a landmine (or parachute-retarded modified marine mine - the largest air-dropped ordnance in use by the Luftwaffe at that time), and William was killed." Hope this helps Gus
143 Company Pioneer Corps war diary begins in June 1940, which would fit with the Leeds Company formation. The National Archives | Search results:"WO 166/5627"
Mighty be something here but I do not have access: Results | From 14th Feb 1941 | Arbroath Herald and Advertiser For The Montrose Burghs | Publication | Angus, Scotland | Location | British Newspaper Archive TD
Fantastic, thanks for all the help so far, looks like Lee may be getting another War Diary order, from googling earlier I found mention of a book Luftwaffe over Scotland, so have ordered a copy which will hopefully add detail. Thanks again everyone Alistair
George King was my grandad. He has an army grave in Womersley Road Cemetry Knottingley. He was married with 5 children. 3 of which are still living
