Thankyou for posting this, Alfred was my grandfather and I have joined these forums partly to research his death

Thankyou David, I only joined in the last 24 hours so have not really discovered anything so far. Details of Alfred's death are unknown, with my cousin saying he died of a snake bite rather than in combat

    Hi Richard

As he is in the Indian Army you may be able to obtain a death certificate or similar via the Indian records held at the British Library.

One place to go for advice is the Families in British India Society (FIBIS)
Welcome to the world of British India family history - Families in British India Society

There is an index of death cert refs British Army Deaths other Ranks 1939-48 on Find My Past, but he may not be in there.

I notice from CWGC records he was originaly buried 15.6.43 a day after his death, at Manipur Road Military Cemetery & reintered at Imphal Miltary Cemetery in 1946. Maybe this indicates he actually died in Imphal, rather than in the surrounding area on ops.

I had never noticed that before when I checked CWGC, thankyou for pointing it out, fortunately the British Museum is only 40 minutes by tube

    Richard,

The British Library now requires a booking: Using our Reading Rooms As it is a specific question you have try the online help option: Question Form - LibAnswers In a previous exchange they were very helpful and upon arrival the microfiche was ready to view (not an easy viewing process though).

Thankyou David, I will try that later on and I seem to remember the viewing process was never easy... have been there 3 times and needed help on each occasion

I looked on Findmypast, and could not see a death record, either in the database from the India Office Records at the British Library, or in a GRO database called GRO War Deaths Indian Services (1939 to 1948) which is part of "British Armed Forces And Overseas Deaths And Burials" British armed forces and overseas deaths and burials | findmypast.co.uk

Do you know where he was born? The GRO database may possibly only relate to those born in England/Wales. If he came from Scotland, you could try ScotlandsPeople
