This is a picture of my Grandad operating a wireless on Sailsbury plain near Imber on the 18th September 1940.

Please can anyone identify the radio type and application?

    Regards

Yes, that does look like a Wireless Set No 11, with a Supply Unit Low-Power and a Supply Unit High Power No 1, all in a carrying frame.

A "fair number" got left behind at the evacuation of the BEF from France and the Germans put them into service. Volume 1 of the excellent series of books "Wireless For The Warrior" contains a copy of the WS11 working instructions, in German. The radio was also the set of choice for the Long-Range Desert Group and with a large aerial was used over ranges of up to 6-800 miles.

    Much sought-after radios these days!

And to quote the WftW website:

"Wireless Set No. 11 was a portable transceiver developed in 1938. Use: general purpose low power set. Used as a vehicle station (truck/AFV), ground station and animal pack station. Frequency range 4.2-7.5MHz. MO control. RF output 0.6-4.5W. R/T and CW. Range up to 20 miles. Very successful design, superseded by No. 19 and 22."

Great pic...10H were stationed at Ogborne St.George at the time, reforming after France and the tragic action at Huppy on 27 May 1940. Do you have any other pics ? I spent 15 years with the Royal Hussars, the ammalgamation of the 10th & 11th Hussars...

    Hi Roddy,

I've got a few photos but not of this period most of the pictures I have are of his time in Palestine with 11th Hussars you can see some of them in my gallery :).
I'm aware of the Huppy battle my Grandad won the DCM there.

    Hi Andreas,

He was posted to the 4th Hussars and served with them until he was captured on the 12th June 1942 in Libya after a tank battle in which only one Stuart tank escaped. He was held by the Italians on hospital ship with a gunshot wound and burns, then later ended up in campo 78 Sulamona.

    Regards
