    C Troop's (336 Bty) present task being outside the new Corp's boundary. Troop moved to protect rear HQ 1 Corp (Map reference VU035816 – Deliverande) to be “ON CALL” to move to support 652 Air Observation Post Squadron as and when required. In action 15-30 hrs.

    336 Bty Battery HQ closed at BENY-SUR-MER and opened at DOUVRES (Map reference VU024801) – 16-00 hrs.

    338 Bty (G Troop) claim to have shot down one ME-109. Category II claim. Not seen to crash.

    Westher – cloudy with showers.

    2 July 1944

    Enemy shelling in area Map Ref 090766 (338 Bty I Troop). Direct hit on Troop HQ. One Other Rank killed, 3 Other Ranks injured.

    Lesson: Dugouts should NOT be sited on the enemy side of a wall as a hit on any part of the wall causes causes explosion directly over the dugout.

    336 Bty/C Troop required to form flak area at Map Ref VU0377 (North of the village of MATHIEU) tomorrow morning to be in action by 08-00 hrs.

    338 Bty instructed to move I Troop HQ tomorrow to same area as H Troop HQ, Map Ref 083779.

    Weather – Fine at first, rain later.

    Oral Instructions from RA 1 Corps (received 11-45 hrs) that 72 Med Regt will cease to be under command 1 Corps at 14-00 hrs. 337 Bty/F Troop accordingly to return to former location when Med Regt moves. 337 Bty/F Troop in action area Map Ref W.0578 at 19-00 hrs.

    A & C Troops, 336 Bty ordered to cease firing in Flak area and return to former respective locations (A Troop – 1 Corp Main HQ and C Troop – 1 Corp Rear HQ).

    On information received from OC Air O.P. 22-45 hrs 338 Bty ordered to deploy one troop in support AOP in area LANDEL (Map Ref 0374), BEUVILLE (0675), LEBISSEY (0472) tomorrow.

    11-15 hrs - RA 1 Corp, Operational Order No. 6 received. Operation GOODWOOD.

    Battery HQ's instructed accordingly and confirmed by written message.

    336 Bty/C Troop to afford protection to 652 AOP Squadron (between AMFREVILLE and LE PLEIN).

    18 July 1944

    Strength – 42 Officers & 802 Other Ranks. (Attached no change)

    00-40 hrs - Order received from RA 1 Corp that no LAA guns situated 5000 yards behind the front line are to open fire during the hours of daylight.

    00-55 hrs – Passed to Batteries.

    04-30 hrs – 336 Bty/C Troop is in action in support of 652 AOP Squadron at 04-30 hrs. Map references 1174 & 1274 (North of RANVILLE).

    10-45 hrs – Message to Batteries. All troops more than 5000 yds from last known front line to be at State 1 manning.

    14-00 hrs – Reference last message – Definition of new State 0 (Zero) manning to be adopted during present restriction.

    Copy of 2nd Army letter SA/5004/RA dated 16 July 1944 and instruction to batteries to concentrate on further training in aircraft recognition and fire discipline during period of restriction in firing.

    “Due to an increasing number of incidents of Anti-Aircraft fire at Friendly aircraft, the Brigadier, RA, 2nd Army issues a letter to all units in regard to additional training required in respect of Aircraft recognition and fire discipline during the daylight hours restriction in firing. As a safeguard for the future, every detachment NCO will be examined in FIRE DISCIPLINE by a Regimental Board. The consequences of the aforementioned order is that ALL the guns of the Regiment as at present deployed, with exception of one troop deployed in support of the AOP Squadron, are forbidden to fire in daylight under any circumstances. Some guns in all Batteries are at present connected to HAA sites to GCC for night barrages”.

    As a safeguard for the future, every dettachment NCO will be examined in FIRE DISCIPLINE forthwith by A Regt Board

    The consequences of the above mentioned Order (O.460) is that ALL the guns of the Regt as present deployed (ie: Two Troops Main HQ 1 Corps, One Troop rear HQ 1 Corps and 5 Troops in support of gun areas 4 AGRA) with exception ONLY of of One Troop in support AOP are forbidden to open fire in daylight in any circumstances.
    Some guns in all Batteries are at present connected via HAA sites to GCC for night barrages.

    RA 1 Corp were asked orally to obtain a ruling as to whether firing by NIGHT at SEEN targets is still generally permitted. Answer – NO.

    21-20 – RA 1 Corp (O.467) of 20-40 hrs – Bofors sited East of ORNE or covering ORNE Bridges or within 5000 yards of front line which are NOT repeat NOT connected to GCC may open fire on Enemy Aircraft provided absolutely clear that Enemy Aircraft are attacking.

    21-30 hrs – Copy of O.467 of 182040 to 336 Bty (for C Troop); the only Troop of the Regiment East of the ORNE.

    23-10 hrs – Determined attack is carried out by about 15 twin engined Enemy Aircraft on the ORNE valley bridges and concentration of troops. A number of flares were dropped. There were casualties to personnel and vehicles.

    1 Other Rank of this Regiment was wounded.

    C Troop (336 Bty) engaged and scored two hits on a Junkers 88 at low level. A Category II claim was submitted.

    Lt. D.R. Haslam to X(ii) list on admission to Hospital (slight accidental injuries).

    Weather – Fine and sunny. Cloudy in evening.

    19 July 1944

    Strength – 41 Officers & 800 Other Ranks. (Attached no change)

    11-40 – Message to all Batteries, that as no RAF flying at present, guns connected through HAA to GCC to man at State III until ban on firing reimposed. (ie: until GCC declare area to be no longer an I.A.Z). Later information received that ban had been reimposed at about 09-15 hrs after morning haze had lifted.

    11-50 hrs – On Instructions RA 1 Corps 338 Battery ordered to move two troops to protect new gun areas of 53 & 68 Medium Regts (4 AGRA) in area Map Refs 1171 & 1172.

    12-15 hrs – Information received from 337 Battery that two Batteries of 4 AGRA in area Map Ref 0078 (One Troop 337 Bty) now moved away.

    16-00 hrs – Permission received by telephone from RA 1 Corps for guns deployed East of River ORNE to engage flares AT NIGHT. Btys informed.

    16-15 hrs – Order received by telephone from RA 1 Corps that 12 second tracer will NOT be used either by DAY or NIGHT. Btys informed. Effect of a ban on 12 second tracer reduces or nullifies the effect on any LAA barrage.

    17-30 hrs – Two Troops (H & I, 338) in action in support 53 & 68 Medium Regts in areas Map Refs 1172 & 1173, EAST or RIVER ORNE.

    22-05 – Order to 338 Bty NOT to fire barrage with Two Troops remaining WEST of RIVER ORNE tonight owing to ban on use of 12 Second Tracer. (This order was isued owing to breakdown of wireless set used for broadcasting barrage instructions to guns and no replacement being readily available).

    Weather – AM Cloudy. PM – Fine and clear with cloud developing in the evening.

    20 July 1944

    06-00 - Strength – 41 Officers & 799 Other Ranks. (Attached no change)

    15-00 to 16-00 hrs – A few Enemy aircraft (ME-109 & FW-190) are engaged by C Troops of 336 Battey & H & I Troops of 338 Battery East of the River ORNE. Several hits were observed.

    18-30 hrs – Reference instructions on opening fire, the following instructions were received from RA 1 Corp. Hostile aircraft SEEN and identified as such, will be engaged at NIGHT. SHORT tracer will be used. LONG tracer will only be used for barrages. Flares may be engaged but with one gun of a Troop only. In special cases, troop commanders may appoint a second gun if they consider it necessary.

    19-05 hrs – Btys informed.

    21-00 hrs –
    Recieved RA 1 Corps Op Order No. 3 of 201805.
    Received RA 1 Corps RA/IC/24/11
    Orders (oral) to batteries as follows:-

    RHQ will move to BEUVILLE area (Map ref 0675) at 11-00 hrs.

    336 Battery

    2 Troops A & B Troops are to defend HQ 1 Corps Main at a new location at BIEVILLE (Map reference 0674).

    C Troop of 336 Battery are to relieve D Troop of 337 battery at 1 Corp Rear HQ at DELIVERANDE.

    Battery HQ to move to a suitable location. Roman Catholic church at PERRIER (Map reference 0674).

    337 Battery

    Move to defend gun areas 65 & 79 Medium & 150 Field Regts in areas Map Refs 0570, 0671 & 0771. (D Troop to move when relieved by C Troop).

    Bty HQ to move to suitable location, Roman Catholic Curch at HEROUVILLE.

    338 Battery

    Move remaining troop (G Tp) to defend gun areas 191 Field Regt, Map refs 1271 & 1272.

    Move Bty HQ accordingly. RC “I” Tp HQ, Map ref 111731.

    All batteries

    No barrages at present, but possibilities will be investigated by the Officer Commanding 336 Battery for the Main Corps Headquarters. A Liaison Officer from 336 Bty will be sent to A.A.O.R. with a wireless set to give immediate notice of any relaxation of restrictions on opening fire. Moves to take place tomorrow morning.

    Weather – AM Fine. PM Thunder and heavy rain.

    09-00 hrs – Heavy rain persisting. A message was received that HQ 1 Corp will NOT
    move today. Move of RHQ accordingly postponed. Following message to Btys.

    336 Bty – None of your troops will move today.

    14-40 hrs – Instructions received from RA 1 Corps with a copy of 2nd Army letter SA/184/SD dated 4 August. One Troop per battery to be disbanded on 12 August to report to 38 RHU (Regimental Holding Unit) and thence proceed to 103 Rft Group in the UK for training as arty specialists and infantry replacements. The organization of the Regiment will then be 3 Batteries each of 2 SP Troops.
    One man per detachment to be withdrawn, reducing WE of detachments from 10 to 9.

    A number of flying bombs passed over Regt area (TILBURG/BREDA) heading in direction of ANTWERP during 24 hours. Several flying on such a course that if shot down they would NOT fall in the V.A.engaged by 337 Battery at TILBURG. (Note: This was the first time this Regt had opened fire with 40mm since 21 August 44). Later order from HQ First Canadian Army situated in TILBURG received orally via RA 1 Corps that flying bombs will NOT be engaged in any circumstances. Batteries instructed accordingly.

    1 March 1945 (Holland)

    09-30 to 15-30 hrs – One of the Battery Captains visits 50 AA Brigade at ANTWERP reference RA 1 Corp's letter of 26 February (Training of LAA Units in the DIVER Belt). Operation DIVER were the counter measures put in place to combat the menace of V1 rockets being fired against the UK and the Port of Antwerp. This was a combination of Allied aircraft and Anti-Aircraft units.

    2 March 1945

    10-00 hrs – One of the Battery Captains visits a unit of 50 AA Brigade near MEERLE (Northern Belgium) with a Liaison Officer 1 Polish LAA Regiment to arrange details of deployments for engaging DIVERS (V1 Rockets). Practice period for the Polish Unit is expected to continue for 10 – 14 days. 336 Battery are to relieve the Polish Battery at S'HERTOGENBOSCH on 5 March. The Polish Battery will relieve 336 Battery at the end of their practice period.

    4 March 1945

    08-30 hrs - Captain C.B. Manifold leaves the unit for a course at the Royal Artillery school at LARKHILL in the UK for Bofors 40mm ground shooting.

    20-30 hrs - One Troop is to relieve a Battery of 1 Polish LAA Regiment at S'HERTOGENBOSCH by 11-00 hrs, 5 March. Upon being relieved, the Battery of 1 Polish LAA Regiment will deploy at LAA “Diver” Practice Camp.

    14-30 hrs – The Regimental 2nd in Command goes to 9 AGRA for a train guards conference and received information that 4 Commando Brigade would be taking over Bocholt Transit Camp and guard duties. 102 LAA Regiment would provide 5 guards only daily at 21-30 hrs. Operational order No. 1 issued to all batteries.

    12-00 hrs – Movement order out to Batteries. RHQ to pass starting point at 06-00 hrs on 17 June.

    1 July 1945

    Lt's. J.L. Gover & Mc.D Maxwell return by air from UK leave.
    22-00 hrs – 4 Russians arrested for stealing property from a farm and handed over to Military Gov.

    2 July 1945

    19-00 hrs – Car failed to stop at MARIENSEL Bridge post when signalled. Occupants apprehended and handed over to 64 HAA Regiment Provost.

    3 July 1945

    Captain J.G. Blair proceeded on UK leave.

    19-00 hrs – A French DP was arrested trying to enter WILHELMSHAVEN by hiding in the back of a lorry. Held at RHQ.

    23-55 hrs – 3 Germans and 1 Russian were apprehended for being out after curfew.

    4 July 1945

    Captain (Q.M) A.W. Spencer, M.M. (Age & Service Group 4) left the unit for Class “A” release, the first member of this Regiment to do so.
    Captain A.C. Chritie, REME, left unit for 35 RHU prior to posting to SEAC. Lt. Lovett Cameron, REME temporarilly attached to Wksp.

    6 July 1945

    18-00 hrs – Received 31 AA Brigade letter about Operation PICK dated 6 July. (Handing over of German Vessels to Allied Forces as reparations). The regiment will provide guards on board the various vessels handed over during the Operation. The letter contained detailed instructions on the procedures to be followed.

    16-00 hrs – 4 Driver Operators returned to the unit having been attached to 652 AOP Squadron since before D-Day. A 5th Driver retained by the AOP as he is being transferred to a Field Artillery Regiment.

    15 July 1945

    15-00 hrs – A German was arrested at MARIENSEL Bridge for trying to smuggle 5 German women across the canal in a packing case. Handed over to MARIENSEL Police.

    Captian P.L. Starkey (337) rejoined unit after course of instruction in UK and UK leave.

    One Sergeant and one Other Rank of 337 Battery were killed when on duty as guard to dumping of ammunition from barges into the sea. Barge on which they were on duty was blown up.

    (As their remains were not recovered, Sergeant William John Newman & Gunner Joseph Tait Todd are commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial in the UK).

    336 Battery, Acting on information from a German civilian, found a shot male German civilian at Map reference RR – 212460, lying at the roadside and in a serious condition. His watch and bicycle had been stolen. There were no signs of Russians in the area. The German, Gustav Wedemeyer was taken via 7 Canadian General Hospital to St. Willehad, WILHELMSHAVEN.
