Buteman 336/102 LAA Regiment (7 Lincolns), RA

102 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment was formed on the 1st December 1941 and became a Regiment of The Royal Artillery.

(It was created from the disbanded, 7th Battalion, The Lincolnshire Regiment (4 July 1940 to 30 November 1941). 7 Lincolns were located to defend the beaches from invasion, between Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Donna Nook, North Cotes, Mablethorpe, Sutton-on-Sea, Anderby Creek, Chapel St. Leonards and Ingoldmells).

102 LAA Regiments first Commanding Officer was Lt. Colonel W.E. Tolley, MC. (He was also the CO of the former 7 Lincolns). The new unit consisted of Regimental Headquarters, 336 LAA Battery, 337 LAA Battery and 338 LAA Battery. (Attached, is a Pdf with a list of names of the former 7 Lincolns names).

At it's peak, the 102 LAA Regiment had 50 Officers and 900 men under command. To date, I know the names of 150 Officers and over 900 Other Ranks who served between 1941 - 1946. These will appear in the following two posts.

It trained in the UK and was based on Anti-Aircraft duties on the South East Coast of England. Then in December 1943, it moved to Hampshire, as Corps Troops (LAA) for British 1 Corps. It went to France and landed in Normandy on the 17/18 June 1944 and helped defend various units. After the defeat of the Germans in Normandy, it helped transport 49 and 51 Divisions and Canadians up to Belgium.

It then moved up to Belgium in mid October 1944 and became Infantry as part of an Adhoc Unit (BobForce) under command 49 Division in the Hoogstraaten area of Northern Belgium. Afterwards, the Regt moved to Breda in the Netherlands and 336 Battery stayed around the area until March 1945. 337 and 338 Batteries were trained on the Canadian Land Mattress Rocket Projectors and took part in a number of key operations on the Dutch/German Border and in Germany itself. 336 Battery then joined Canadian units in April 1945 to help clear any remaining enemy troops from the South of the Netherlands.

In June 1945, they made a final move to Wilhelmshaven, as occupation forces of the BAOR, under command 31 AA Brigade and 2 Canadian Division. They along with 3 HAA Regiments (64, 98 and 174), had almost 40,000 German Kriegsmarine under their control. The Regiment was disbanded on March 4 1946.

Buteman 336/102 LAA Regiment (7 Lincolns), RA

    OTHER RANKS

WHEN THE REGIMENT WENT TO NORMANDY IN JUNE 1944, THE OFFICIAL WAR ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNIT WAS 816 MEN, INCLUDING THOSE ATTACHED (REME, RAOC, RASC ETC). THERE ARE 897 (INCLUDING REPLACEMENTS AS A RESULT OF INJURIES AND DEATH) NAMES WHICH HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BE IDENTIFIED FROM SOURCE DOCUMENTATION AND ARE LISTED BELOW.

AT THE BEGINNING OF AUGUST 1944, SECOND BRITISH ARMY ISSUED AN ORDER REDUCING THE NUMBER OF MEN IN CORPS AND DIVISIONAL LAA UNITS. THE WAR ESTABLISHMENT AT THAT POINT WAS REDUCED TO 545 OTHER RANKS. THOSE THAT LEFT WERE POSTED AS REPLACEMENTS FOR OTHER ROYAL ARTILLERY UNITS, OR TO BECOME RETRAINED AS INFANTRY, DUE TO A SEVERE SHORTAGE OF MEN. 40 MEN RETURNED TO THE LINCOLNSHIRE REGT AND WERE POSTED TO THE 4TH BATTALION.

    SEE ALL NAMES, BELOW:-

NOMINAL ROLL OF MEN WHO SERVED

FOLLOWING FURTHER RECENT RESEARCH, I CAN NOW LIST 810 NAMES OF MEN (OTHER RANKS) WHO SERVED. THE NAMES HAVE BEEN COMPILED FROM THE FOLLOWING SOURCES - LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT NOMINAL ROLL, 336 BATTERY NOMINAL ROLL, TROOP PHOTOS, COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION, CASUALTY FORMS FROM THE WAR DIARY AND RELATIVES OF THOSE WHO SERVED.

    Thats some get reasearch Rob
more formations not fully recognized over the years. Unfortunately, not much to offer here except that the Brits didnt get too excited about the rocket projector idea in early 44 and left it to the Canadians to develop and deploy (maybe none of the decision makers were ever on the receiving end of a barrage of moaning minnies). I guess they used the same 60 pound rockets used by the ground attack squadrons??
I didn't realize that there were any British artillery units trained or active using them.

The Land Mattress arrived in theatre on 10 October 1944 and 112 Canadian LAA Battery were trained on it initially. They used it for the attack on Flushing & to support the Poles between 6 - 8 November. On 10 November, it was handed over to 338 Battery and they trained at a special camp set up near Tilburg until the end of the war. 337 battery also used it when a further 12 units arrived in theatre to supplement the existing 12.

Thanks for that extra link Matt. I have a booklet written by a guy called Doug Knight which covers the complete history from deveolpment to deployment.

    Thanks for your comments Mike.

AS THE CITATION IS DIFFICULT TO READ, IT IS TRANSCRIBED AS FOLLOWS.

ON THE NIGHT 19/20 AUGUST AT ST. PIERRES SUR DIVES, SGT ADAMS WAS IN CHARGE OF A GUN WHEN AN ATTACK ON THE AREA WAS MADE BY ABOUT 20 AIRCRAFT WITH HIGH EXPLOSIVE AND INCENDIERY BOMBS. AS THE ATTACK DEVELOPED A STICK OF BOTH TYPES OF BOMBS FELL ACROSS THE GUN SETTING FIRE TO THE BIVOUAC AND THE CAMOFLAGE NET AND WOUNDING ONE OF THE ATTACHMENT.

BOMBS CONTINUED TO FALL VERY CLOSE TO THE GUN BUT SGT ADAMS WHO WAS OFF DUTY AT THE TIME RAN ACROSS AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF ANOTHER MAN DROVE THE GUN CLEAR OF THE BURNING BIVOUAC & THEN REMOVED THE BURNING CAMOFLAGE NET.

BY THIS PROMPT ACTION, SGT ADAMS UNDOUBTABLY SAVED THE GUN FROM DESTRUCTION AND ALSO SET A HIGH EXAMPLE OF DEVOTION TO DUTY.”

    WEAPONS OF WAR

WHEN THE REGIMENT BECAME A LIGHT ANTI-AIRCRAFT REGIMENT OF THE ROYAL ARTILLEY, THEY WERE EQUIPPED WITH THE BOFORS 40 MM ARTILLERY PIECE, WHICH WAS TOWED. LATER THEY WOULD BE GIVEN A SELF PROPELLED VERSION.

UPON DEPARTURE TO NORMANDY IN JUNE 1944, THEY TOOK A MIXTURE OF TOWED AND SELF PROPELLED. 54 OF THESE WEAPONS WENT TO FRANCE. 18 GUNS PER BATTERY AND 6 GUNS FOR EACH OF THE THREE TROOPS IN EACH BATTERY.

AFTER THE REGIMENT WAS REDUCED IN SIZE, THE 3 BATTERIES WOULD LOSE A TROOP AND THE SIX BOFORS THAT WENT WITH THEM. THE UNIT WOULD NOW HAVE 36 OF THE TWO VARIANTS OF THE BOFORS.

IN OCTOBER 1944, A NEW ARTILLERY PIECE ARRIVED IN NORTH WEST EUROPE AND WAS INITIALLY TRIALED BY A CANADIAN LAA BATTERY (112) DURING OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS ON FLUSHING AND ONE TO SUPPORT THE POLISH 1sT ARMOURED DIVISION. FOLLOWING IT‘S SUCCESS, TWO BATTERIES OF 102 LAA REGIMENT REGIMENT, WERE TO BE RETRAINED IN THE USE OF THIS NEW WEAPON, WHICH WAS CALLED THE LAND MATTRESS, THIS WAS A CANADIAN PRODUCED WEAPON, WHICH WAS A TOWED ROCKET PROJECTOR. THERE WERE TWO VERSIONS, THE TILLING STEPHENS AND THE MEYER DUNFORD. 30 ROCKETS COULD BE FIRED FROM THE FORMER AND 32 FROM THE LATTER. INITIALLY, THERE WOULD BE 12 OF THE TILLING STEPHENS AND 337 AND 338 BATTERIES WOULD ALTERNATE WITH ONE ANOTHER DURING OPERATIONS. 12 OF THE MEYER DUNFORD WOULD ARRIVE LATER AND BOTH BATTERIES WOULD USE BOTH VARIANTS TOGETHER.

THE BOFORS USE WOULD CHANGE QUICKLY AND ALSO BE USED IN A “GROUND SHOOT” ROLE AGAINST ENEMY TROOPS, A MOST EFFECTIVE WEAPON. AT THE BEGINNING OF APRIL 1945, 336 BATTERY WOULD RECEIVE FOUR QUAD 0.5 CALIBRE MACHINE GUNS AND LOSE 4 OF THE BOFORS. THE REMAINING BOFORS AND NEW QUADS WOULD BE USED SUPPORTING OPERATIONS OF THE 5TH CANADIAN ARMOURED DIVISION.

ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THE WAR WAS OVER IN EUROPE IN MAY 1945, THE REGIMENT RELINQUISHED THE BOFORS, LAND MATTRESS AND QUAD’S. THEY WOULD BECOME AN OCCUPATION FORCE IN GERMANY AND ASSUME THE ROLE OF POLICING THE POPULATION.

SHOWN BELOW ARE PHOTOS OF THE TWO VARIANTS OF BOFORS, THE LAND MATTRESS AND THE QUAD.
