Thank you, gentlemen, for such rapid and informative replies.

Bodston and ramacal, you seem to be on the right track. Another snippet from Arthur Skeet's notes refers to him being on an island, presumably off the Yogoslavian coast somewhere?
Thanks also for the welcome. Kind of nice to be a junior member, having attained age 74 yesterday! OK I do realise it is junior membership of this forum!
    Cheers, AJM (Lt 1/ESurreys)

    Many happy returns of yesterday.
Vis is indeed an island in the Adriatic, now part of Croatia. During WW2 it was, of course part of Yugoslavia with some fierce fighting.

    A quick Google found these

I think that Battery numbers were duplicated across the various Royal Artillery branches, as we were given the 40mm Bofors reference and the fact that it was registered as 101 Bty LAA. I reckon that the Medium Regt. would be a red herring.
Nothing in Routledge about the Mediums, as it only deals with Anti-Aircraft regiments.

I thought it was just Regimental numbers that were duplicated, not Batteries? I have to admit that the ra39-45 site is not the most accurate and lacks a huge amount of info about all of the units.

Don't think so. Certainly both HAA and LAA branches start with 1st/1st (1st Bty/1st Regt.), so I would imagine that all the other branches (Field, Medium, Heavy, A/T etc..) would be the same.

Edit: I'm getting very confused here. With Routledge and Royal Artillery 1939-45 contradicting each other on battery numbers. It seems as though they may have originated that way (e.g. 1st/1st) But they didn't stay like it very long.

I've e-mailed someone connected with the Firepower Museum for clarification on the subject.

My Grandad served in the 100th LAA RA 331 Battery. They were initially sent to Iraq & Persia. Then onto Africa to fight with the 8th Army in Tunisia, my grandad was awarded the Africa star with 8th Army clasp. After that onto Italy Salerno, Garigliano and Landing at Anzio. My Grandad got posted to the went to the Gothic Battles. He was posted to the London Irish Rifles when they disbanded in 1944.
