    Hi,

do you have any records on Sgt. James Edward Lawton Who died at Anzio on the 07/03/1944?
He served in the Berkshires at this time and was supposedly killed trying to save his fellow men.

Stuart Avery In my wagon & not a muleteer.

Something is't cricket here with these two months & dates. My guess is this chap would probably have D.O.Ws.

He gets no mention on the pages for the 5th/ 6th. Not that i can see. Or earlier on for that matter. Will check again later. From the 3rd, they had not been long on the beachhead.

The file below is taken from the FIGHTING TENTH A short history of the 10th Battalion.
See the second paragraph. Its the month of March. This Cpl gets a D.C.M. Will check the diaries, but has Gary, has mentioned they are not much use.
    Regards,
    Stu.

This is the WD for 4th February. They were shelled in the early hours (OC B Company killed) and also later on in the night with a mention of many casualties some of which are in the casualty report above.

Unusually, he was buried in Anzio War Cemetery which is predominantly the resting place of men from 1 British Infantry Division who landed first.

Men from the other Divisions - 5 British Infantry Division and 56 British Infantry Divisions - to which 168 Infantry Brigade belonged, tended to be buried in the Beach Head Cemetery.

It may be because 168 Infantry Brigade, sent to Anzio in haste, arrived independently and immediately came under command 1 British Infantry Division and so their casualties were administered by that Division.

    Gary,

you have far too much time on your hands!;)

Nice-one. Its nightmare of a diary to read. I do really take my hat off to this battalion. That short time in the Anzio campaign did finish them off. Poor sods. I could be wrong here, but I'm sure that they got some reinforcements of about 100 chaps from the 1 Green Howards? Edit.120 chaps of the Green Howards. It does not state the battalion.

You beat me to it when it came to reading it.

    Regards,
    Stu.

    Hi,

Do you have any records on Private Ronald Neve?
He was my grandfather and was in the 10th, serving in Italy. I understand his experience was fairly horrific.

Personal records can only be obtained from the MoD. As an OR he won't be mentioned in the war diaries.

However, it looks as if he was wounded on 22nd July 1943 during the Sicily campaign:

IMG_0007.jpg Thought you might like to see this. Possibly one of the last images of the 10th Battalion if my dad's got the date right. He was in A coy.
