Hi Titania, Thanks for the information - I will certainly look at this info tomorrow when I have a lot more time. I don't know about it being a "Mortar" Platoon - I was informed that it was a Motor Platoon but have since been told that may not be the case. Hunting again!! Best wishes Ann
Hello Vitellino Thank you for your reply. I have been told that it was a Motor Platoon but now several of members' have indicated that it might be a "Mortar" Platoon, therefore I have no idea so will need to look at this again. Kind regards Ann
You can add your post below a quote - there is no need to make 2 posts (1 for the quote and then 1 for your post) Vitellino was one of those who mentioned the possibility of it being a Mortar platoon Do you have his service records?, they are the key and your most important asset in your quest TD
Thanks TD. I've deleted about half of Crosbygirl 's posts by removing the quoted posts without replies. Crosbygirl . This is what a post should look like if you want to reply to a post & include that post as a quote.
Hello Larry Apologies for not seeing your post until now, I have been absent from the board for awhile. My late father was originally in the RA (110/39 LAA) was transferred to the East Surrey Regiment, having been seconded to the American 5th Army. I am researching his journey and also compiling a book of memoirs from Italy Campaign Veterans. I have some books that you might be interested: History of the East Surrey Regiment Vol. IV from 1920-1952 With the East Surreys in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy 1942-1945 (Fighting for every river and mountain) by Bryan Evans Pub. by Pen & Sword Battle Axe Division - From Africa to Italy with the 78th Division 1942-45 The Surreys in Italy - Italy 1943-45 (Obtained from the Regimental Museum at Clandon in Surrey before it burnt down) What remained after the fire was transferred to the Surrey History Centre. Hope this helps, it has helped me somewhat. Best Wishes Ann
Crosbygirl. Your father’s transfer from 39 LAA Regt RA to 1 Surreys was the result of the anti-aircraft threat in Italy completely disappearing in the late-Summer of 1944 and the acute shortage of infantry after the Battle of the Gothic Line in Sep 44. Most of the LAA Regt RA units were disbanded and the troops - both officers and soldiers, were transferred to undermanned infantry units. Here they stayed for the remainder of the war. Regards Frank
