John Stewart Clyde was my uncle. My Dad remembers what happened and I've recently found letters to my Grandma (Agnes Stewart Clyde) from the RAF confirming this. They were in barracks and there was a direct hit from a flying bomb. Most of them were killed instantly but Stewart was one of the few pulled alive from the debris - he died in the early hours of 5th August without ever regaining consciousness. The bomb hit on the night of 3rd August. The telegram to my grandparents said he had been pulled alive from the debris at 3am on 4th August. Stewart had just finished his training and they had just been given orders and were about to go into action.
Terz welcome to the forum if you see fit could post additional info/document. All forum members would be most interested regards Clive
Hi Clive, Thanks for the welcome. Many of the letters I have are very personal letters to my Grandma, Stewart's mother, but I've scanned and attached a couple of other documents I hope are of interest. The one I think may be of most interest to this discussion is the letter from Hendon on 2 pages as it refers to the casualties of an airplane accident the previous day being buried alongside those killed by the flying bomb. I'm sure I have more letters in the bundle but as I'm working back through them I haven't come across them again yet. I'll add more when I do find them though. Terz
Terz I am thankful to you for placing a story behind the casualties. greatly appreciated. regards Clive
