    Hi there,

I have a friend who is going to the Netherlands for the 80th Anniversary of their Liberation in May 2025. She believes her father was in the Netherlands at some point between July 1944-July 1945, and she is trying to find a specific location to visit, to make the experience all the more personal.

L/Sgt B. W. Green served in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. His unit was the 2nd Canadian Divisional Signals (“G” Section), which was attached to the 6th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery. Upon his arrival in Northwest Europe, organization fell under the umbrella of the 21st Army Group:

    21st Army Group
    >First Canadian Army
    >>2nd Canadian Infantry Division
    >>>“G” Section, 2nd Canadian Divisional Signals (R.C.C.S), attached to 6th Field Regiment, R.C.A.

Firstly, have I organized this correctly? Secondly, where do I need to be looking to find the movements of the 2nd Divisional Signals/6th Field Regiment in the first half of 1945? Brigade and Division War Diaries? Please be as specific as possible, as my familiarity with WWII records is limited.

We also have a family photo of Bert in “Hasseldt, Germany” in Feb 1945, but I cannot find a location in Germany by that name. Is it possible this could be “Hasselt” in Belgium or the Netherlands?

    Thanks very much!
    Sarah

Page from Feb 1945 war diary. If you look they have typed printed an ‘L’ above the name so it was indeed HASSELT

Here is a 1944 military map and the red arrow is showing the location of Regimental HQ (MR 941536)

A closer view of the map and they were probably located in the building as shown by the red arrow

Temujin, is absolutely correct. In February 1945 they stayed for a while at Hasselt, near Kleve during the operation Veritable.

And i didn't read the diary, but for sure they stayed near Nijmegen, the Netherlands somewhere between December and February.

On 8 February 1945 6th field took part in the opening barrage of operation Veritable.
