A book review, in September 2021, of Anthony King's book on urban warfare. Sadly useful today: #WavellReviews “Urban Warfare in the Twenty-First Century” by Anthony King » Wavell Room
Ukrainian journalist: Russian war against Ukraine. The occupiers are destroying Kharkiv, bombing other cities, killing civilians. Captive Russian soldiers sing «Putin hu*lo». Day seven: Babel Online All the best Andreas
Much media speculation over Lukashenko’s map yesterday: Part of the maskirovka, or not? Interesting gold shield patch, with horse’s head and bar on the blue sub table, top-ish right.
My money is on the Ukrainians in actual street-to-street fighting, which is why I think the Russians will avoid it and instead flatten whole city sections. All the best Andreas
What do people feel about the films and photos of captured Russian squaddies? Owen reminded me chatting elsewhere that it's contrary to the Geneva conventions. Might be what many of us want to see, but should we? Not even sure either state is a signatory,. Think Russia might have dismissed them a couple of years back?
PoW exploitation. It's very very clever stuff by the Ukrainians. It's also against the Convention./ All the best Andreas
You don't have to be highly trained in operational warfare or have special intel channels: Terrain and transport infrastructure dictate the routes, and nothing has changed in the region since OP Barbarossa. As long as Kharkiv holds, the Ukrainian army can hold in the Donbas - and vice versa. Once the Russian army has bombed its way through Kharkiv, it can advance towards Dnipr, and then the entire south-east of Ukraine is no longer defensible. However, this must happen BEFORE the thaw, otherwise there will be the same problems as just before Kyiv. Both sides know that, which is why Kharkiv is being fought over so fiercely right now.
Crikey, Dave. Someone mentioning the Strait really does conjure memories of Civil Defence bunker briefings. Is it 1989 again? Should I get the Bomb the Bass & Iron Maiden CDs out?
According to HRW, both Ukraine and Russia are parties to the Geneva Convention and Protocol I. I don't care much for the videos - young lads, many of them wounded making statements under fear and duress.

Indeed. Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Article 3 1(c) (...the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at any time and in any place whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned persons) Outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment ...An impartial humanitarian body, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, may offer its services to the Parties to the conflict ... But it may already be a shade tricky identifying an agreeable ‘impartial’ ...
Shows my limited knowledge Until Dan mentioned it i had never heard of Rasputitsa what we have seen so far the attackers are using metalled roads Based on Rasputitsa cross country, mother nature would not be so obliging
Navalny. From prison, somehow. Maybe. https://twitter.com/navalny/status/1498948871514435588?s=20&t=-4wfXKKCjnrgDSkxjYhCvQ
In pre-war Russia, a tweet could land you in prison. In war-time Russia, prison tweets YOU. All the best Andreas
I imagine there'll be a fall onto some ornate prison railings soon. Seem to have been a few railing falls of late. Sigh.
