Borrow loads now and everyone repays later when the rascals are no longer in power.

Public spending to be slashed and services cut as a result and then higher taxation direct and indirect.

Here we go round and round again.

If it wasn't so serious an issue, perhaps we could laugh about it.

    Regards

What really amazes me is that people seem to be SURPRISED that Labour has completely f----d this country up over the last 12/13 years!! They inherited one of the strongest economies in the world and lo and behold they walk away (or rather are dragged away kicking and screaming) having completely ruined it! The billions and billions that they have wasted is truly criminal.
Yes I know it's a 'global recession' etc etc but how come we are in the worst shape of all industrialised nations to recover from it?? Brown has got to be culpable somewhere along the line as he ran the economy for 10 years before sliding into the 'top job' (and then didn't even have the balls to go to the country to get his OWN mandate!) Well what a shock! I'm sorry but when have a Labour Govt. ever done anything differently. They have always had the reputation of being a 'tax and spend' party and this lot have been no better.
IMHO I think that in hundreds of years time when historians look back on this Labour Govt. they will be seen as the worst we have ever had.
    Sorry for the rant..............

National debt now worst since Second World War

Britain's total borrowing increases to £799bn; Economists warn that austerity budget is inevitable

Britain's borrowing surged to a record £13.3bn in June, official figures showed yesterday as economists used phrases such as "dire", "alarming" and "parlous" to describe the state of the nation's public finances. The figure is nearly double that for the same month last year while the actual cash shortfall also stood at a record of £19bn, £7.6 billion higher than last year.

Total borrowing now stands at a colossal £799bn – 56.6 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).

    Sorry for the rant..............
It is the month of august, on the shores of the black sea.
It is raining, and the little town looks totally deserted.
These are tough times, everybody is in debt and everybody lives on credit.
Suddenly a rich tourist comes to town.
He enters the only hotel, lays a 100 Euro note on the reception counter and goes to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to choose one.
The hotel proprietor takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his debt to the butcher.
The butcher takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his debt with the pig farmer.
The pig farmer runs to pay his debt to the supplier of his feed and fuel.
The supplier of feed and fuel takes the 100Euro note, and runs to pay his debt with the town prostitute, who in these hard times offered her sevices on credit.
The prostitute runs to the hotel, and uses the 100 Euro note to settle her debt with the hotel proprietor for the rooms she rented when she brought clients there.
The hotel proprietor then lays the 100 euro note back on the counter so the rich tourist will not suspect anything.
At that moment the tourist comes down after inspecting the rooms and takes his 100 Euro note, saying he did not like any of the rooms and leaves town.
No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now without debt, and looks to the future with a lot of optimism.......
AND THAT GENTLEMEN, THAT IS HOW OUR GOVERMENT IS DOING BUSINESS TODAY

As I see it Britain is no longer an Industrial nation, compared to say after the war in the 1940's and 1950's.

It has been one succession of closures after another.
We rely as a nation on the North Sea Gas, which is dwindling away and the Banking and Investment houses, which no-one now has much confidence in, even after being thrown Billions of pounds of taxpayers money.

One of the reasons we are slow to come out of recession is our over reliance on the Fianancial sector.

I will get off my soap box as it just depresses me seeing what is happening at the moment.

    Regards
    Tom

Fair point Smudger, I guess I should have said "top 10 economies" or something similar. I agree that we are far too heavily reliant on the 'service industries' and that we no longer actually 'make' anything that the rest of the world wants (or very few things!) It would appear that almost our entire income as a nation comes from what the City of London can conjure up out of thin air and this is probably why we are in such a sorry state!
That said however, I cannot help but feel that this Govt. has been completely negligent in the handling of our economy and now we are all going to have to take a huge bite of the s--t pie. The implications for our children are going to be massive and they are the ones I feel most sorry for. My daughter is currently doing a degree at University and she explained to me the other day how she will leave with debts of between 30K and 40K! This would have been bad enough if she was going to be entering an economy where jobs were plentiful etc etc but that just won't be the case. How on Earth are these kids expected to make a start in life, get on the property ladder and so on?
Perhaps my generation (the baby boomers of the 60's :)) are partly to blame as we reached adulthood in a world where money always seemed to be easily available (ie CREDIT) and we took full advantage of it!
    All the best............
