I visited Feniscowles, near Blackburn, at the weekend and photographed the church's war memorial. Among the WW2 names is that of Phoebe Mercer of the Women's Voluntary Service. In February 1945, along with some other members of the W.V.S., Phoebe was sent to Assam and then on to run a canteen at Pandu, close to the border with Burma. After VJ Day Phoebe moved to Bangkok but on 21st November 1945 she was drowned. She's buried at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. There's an excellently researched article about her life and death on Immanuel Church's website - http://www.immanuelfeniscowles.org/Phoebe-Mercer1.html
