This young man had an interesting schooling. He missed joining an AMC (what he calls an Armed Merchant Coffin) because of his poor handwriting. He first joined a salvage ship that had been a drifter and then transferred to another that had been a mud hopper. As he says more uncomfortable, but slightly less dangerous than an AMC. He went on to be a Senior Purser in Union Castle Line
