My father in law Rufus Ruffle was Rifle Brigade, captured at Calais.
We went with him to Calais for a Parade.
Always amazes me how small a world it is.

880BCC04-D850-44EF-8D8C-F6EF6216929D.jpeg “English prisoners Winnezeele”. A few things to note in this pic. There are French POWs too, including a civilian. At least one of the men is wounded as evidenced by the head bandage. Photo probably taken late May 1940 during the rearguard fighting around Dunkirk which is only 20 miles away. Winnezeele is in the vicinity of Cassel (about 5 miles) and Hazebrouck (8 miles) which were the scene of fierce fighting. After Cassel fell, the survivors attempted a breakout heading in the direction on Winnezeele. I took a look at the CWWGC website and there are 26 British soldiers interred in the local churchyard. Based on the units identified these men could be from the 4th battalion Ox & Bucks Light Infantry, 2nd or 5th battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, 140th Field Regiment Royal Artillery, Royal Signals, Worcestershire Yeomanry (anti tank regiment) Royal Engineers, Royal Welch Fusiliers, or East Riding Yeomanry (Royal Armoured Corp s).
Based on this website The Breakout (part 1 of 2) – 140th (5th London) Army Field Regiment, Royal Artillery I am speculating that the men may be from either the 140th Field Regiment RA or East Riding Yeomanry.
