The Evening Chronicle (Newcastle) 14th January 1942 (Wednesday) reported :-
"Mrs E Covell of 21a Church Street , Winlaton, has received official news that her husband Pte R Covell (30) D.L.I has died of wounds received in the evacuation of Dunkirk and has been buried at Rosendael (Belgium). Covell had served 13 years in the Territorials."

4448045 Private R. Covell, served with the 9th Battalion DLI . Number came from Army Form B 358 enlistment book, Durham Light Infantry, no. 14, nos. 4448001 - 4449000, Covering the enlistment period 24 January 1930 - 7 May 1931.

Edit:- added photo courtesy of Verrieres (Jim ,DLI 1920-46Website) Richard Covell was posted missing on 1st June 1940 this was the day 9th DLI left France so will be an assumed date . The Army made enquiries into his fate sending printed lists of the missing around PoW camps and interviewing fellow soldiers. It wasn`t until 1941 that it was accepted that Pte Covell had died of wounds.

    Hi there,
Really pleased to come across this. He is my Great Uncle.
I visited his grave a few years ago and and next year am planning on taking a guided tour of the battlefields where he would have fought. I'd love to find exactly where he fought and how he sustained his injuries as its the been the topic of speculation for quite a while.
    Thanks
    Phil
