Thursday 16th July 1942 HMS Gulf Stream is recorded with the following casualties on this date. BAXTER, Noel E L, Ty/Act/Lieutenant, RNVR, (Nile), killed [ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY] HORNCASTLE, William, Ordinary Seaman, RNPS, LT/JX 284047, killed [ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY] PEARSON, Victor L, Leading Seaman, RNPS, LT/JX 221498, killed [ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY] WALTON, Henry J, Ordinary Seaman, RNPS, LT/JX 253180, killed [ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY] YOUNG, John C, Engineman, RNPS, LT/KX 111487, killed [ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY] Naval-history say the vessel was lost after an explosion. The burials would indicate this occurred at Alexandria. I have not been able to confirm the identity of the vessel type (Harbour Launch?) or the cause of the explosion. Any ideas? Regards, Steve
Naval History actually describes the vessel as a launch. I have also seen her noted against the deaths of those men as HM. N.A.B. GULF STREAM which suggests some sort of auxiliary craft. N.A.B. = Naval Auxiliary Boat. These were the boats for Alexandria - DORRIMEE (Ty/Lt R Young RNVR), FESSONIA (no CO listed), GULF STREAM (Py/Ty/Sub Lt S D Lambert RNVR, MAUREEN II, TRIM TOO, WYREEMA (no COs listed), all at Alexandria. Baxter, Noel Edward Lindsay - HMS Nile (RN base, Alexandria) (additional; on passage) (killed on the launch Gulf Stream that exploded) Regards Hugh.
Hi, GULF STREAM was originally named BLUEBIRD and owned by Lt. Col. R. Chadwick. She was a motor boat built in 1933 and weighed 16 ton. Taken into service on 12/6/40. Used as Auxiliary Patrol (Mediterranean Command). On 19/8/41 she was compulsorily acquired. Miscellaneous Naval (Mediterranean Command). 16/7/42 - Total Loss. Regards Danny
