mmmmk...so u thought the german ww2 helmet offered good neck and head protection overall eh?? well the ww1 version is even more bulky....if only i knew how to post pictures i could show u the one i have....anyway its pretty damn big, the 1916 version is the one im talking about....when rearmament recommenced in 1935 the German army decided to reduce its size since it was too big and caused neck pains. Officers and radio operators in ww1 had special helmets with a big chunk missing around the ears it was so big and dampened sound a lot. The bolts on the 1916 helmet is designed to add a HUGE metal plate covering the forhead to the top of the head...very heavy but necessary for machine gunners....otherwise the german helmet is probably one of the best....but i must say the ROMANIAN one is pretty cool....basically a trojan helmet without the broom thing on top....the french helmets are pretty cool too....dont see them around a lot in pics and stuff cause ....well the french werent around for long during the war...

Although some of this thread was meant as fun, the interesting note is that the Americans now use a very similar shaped helmet to the German Stahlhelm.

pfffiou....that plate one was hard to find....theyre so rare these days....but see what those bolts are for??? all these days i was wondering while staring at my Great-Grand-father's m16 (1916 issue) and decided to do a research....high school was truly boring....but see how machine-gunners could be like "yeah u can try shooting me or each this hot lead!!"

my family had forgotten it, i thought it was a shame so i cleaned it and its resting in my room....quite a show....i sometimes where it and goose step by myself in my room blaring some rammstein!! ja!

The standard of debate on here in 2006 was interesting to say the least.

You should read some of jimbotosome 's threads on P-47 "Jugs" & what he thought of the Red Army.

"Best" helmet? As usual in these things I don't know what the criteria are supposed to be.Aesthetically I like the Brodie best of all and by a mile. The French Adrian is pretty good visually and being rather Art Nouveau it suits the French perfectly. The US M1 is just acceptable, perhaps the least ugly of the post-WWI helmets. The German helmet is too angular and alien-looking, too...well, too German. The Soviet and Italian helmets are also alien-looking (ideal tor Sontarans) and too smooth and characterless to be attractive. I don't like the late-war British helm that the Canadians wore so often in NWE, it looks like the bastard child of a Brodie and an M1. Well, maybe half-British and half-Yank headgear is appropriate for the Canadians, but I still find it ugly. I don't know which of these was the most effective, but I suppose it wouldn't have been the Brodie or the Adrian.

It was more a question of... tone.
I definitely didn't 'meet' Owen here while discussing possible ways to make Jimbo explode. That would be wrong.

The thread's also a good example of how various forum moves over the years can trash things.
Lost images, messed-up quotes, and poll votes moved about.
    Think I'll reset the poll.
Daft thread, but a part of the place nonetheless.

Swiss win that category, followed by the Dutch.

Have always thought it interesting that whilst:

    and for sunnier climes:

..... when push had come to shove:

Personally, I had an affectation for the Helmet Steel Airborne Troops Mk 2, but largely out of mischief.

A couple of years back, I saw a variation of this:
    https://scitechdaily.com/shocking-results-when-wwi-helmets-were-compared-to-modern-military-designs/
and sensed WC might have had a bit of insider information, all those years back.

Anon, more generally associated anecdotes at:
    ARTICLES

    Methought:
    Number 5
Similarly to re-using surplus helmet stocks as kitchen equipment, although not on such a large scale, farmers and the like would often block up airvents and liner attaching holes on discarded helmets, add a crude handle and use the helmet for all manner of things, as can be observed on this example which was used as a pig food scoop by a French farmer ...

    was a good one.

Very good point about Churchill and the Adrian.

    Always found this interesting.

Was sure I had a lot more on testing/approval of Stahlhelms, diagrams of test field layout etc., but can't for the life of me find it now.
Just another example that little really happens by accident.

Thank you for that. I can imagine the discussions over whether the M1936 would have a Stirnpanzer standard capability etc:

On remarkably shaped helmets of not so long ago:

this adaption of the "Kelly" heaume must have been tricky in the prone, doubly so with his gat.
