Hi to all who like detailed War Diaries (even more so in that rather long Italian Campaign that just went on for ever, and ever. I do think this is in (my opinion one of the most detailed WDs that was ever done in the all of the First British Infantry whilst in the Anzio Campaign. The 1 Irish, and 5 Grenadier Guards are stuffed with detail. Parts of the 2/7 Mx Regiment are for the period of early February are.

The 5 Grenadier Guards run to about for a round figure of (700 pages just for 1944)! Anyone got the time to compile a book on this battalion? If I have ever win the lottery (then I would love to have a do at it). Keeping things stored on your laptop is not much use. See Gary Tankard for a copy of the 46 ROYAL TANK REGIMENT for Jan- July 44. I'm sure he will charge a decent rate for his time in traveling down to copy them.

If its Ok with Adam, dbf, and Owen? Please do not move this thread somewhere else? If one of you do read this thread, has I'm sure you will do. Why does it take a age to Upload 65 pages at a time, and then do everything else? Post a file at a time which is all day of a job (plus a couple of other days). Can it be made easier for all of who have not got all day? By the way, I've to concentrate more on posting all these files than when it comes to driving my wagon.

The pub is about to kick me out before closing time.

More to follow in time. Even the sketch maps are rather good.

    Gary, thanks for your time.

    Regards,
    Stu.

More of question that Otto could answer.
He pays for this place out of his own pocket.
We've got what he can afford to give us.
I'm grateful we've got what we have .
I suggest sharing large files another way.

I'm not suggesting sharing files in another way. Why would I want to do that? Not sure that I, or other members needs reminding that Otto pays for this board. Weird for you stating the obvious.
I'm most gratefull for what he pays for.

Been on this board for near on ten years. Lets get back to this thread if you don't mind?

Edit.. What about advertisements that help to pay for this board? Not complaining at all unless I've missed something?

I only asked to tweek the way to post many files in one way. Is that far too much work to find out how to do it? Will that cost much coin? Blimey.. I've even been a Patron in the past.

    Regards,
    Stu

Used to work like that, but the shift to HTML5 & demise of Flash as an uploader seemed to kill the multiple upload ability on this version of Xenforo.
Tried various ways to reinstate it over the years (especially since we sorted the bloated image uploads) but nothing stuck. Works on 2F, but even mirroring some of their settings didn't fix here, so suspect server end which I can't access.
Will have another look, but since we haven't changed version for a while I'm afraid I don't expect to succeed..

    Yeah. 2F has this:
    Screenshot 2022-08-17 023352.jpg

    We only have this:
    Screenshot 2022-08-17 023434.jpg

So I'm afraid without that option I can't switch the multi uploader back on for anyone using a modern browser.

You asked a question , addressing us 3 & I said it's something only Otto can fix.

We're limited on what we can do.

Adam, thanks for the explanation. Will jog on with the rest. Some changes over the years are not always the best.

Just before a carry-on spending a long time of uploading all these files, and then posting them.;). Perhaps I should make a apology to dbf, if she thinks I was being somewhat flippant in parts of my opening post of this thread? I hold my hands and say sorry. Probably not has (you three have skins has thick has a Rhino and Crocodile combined)! Even updated formats of this board over the years can still be frustrating. Last but not least, Owen, you could of done what Adam did, and explain what he has posted, or did what dbf did and post it on my profile page. I stand by what I said in my post #3 regarding what you mentioned about Otto paying for this fine board out of his "own pocket"! Not needed from a wise Mod.

The Accounts that follow really are worth the time spent in posting them. I've yet to work out the name of the Commander of B Sqn and he's not happy at times with the Infantry when it comes to the early parts of the Anzio Campaign. The CO gives his opinion later on has to what lessons could be learnt, or should have been done. A fine Regiment that for what ever reason did not follow the 1 Division later from Florence to Monte Grande.

Need to check if I've missed a page from my previous post.

    Regards,
    Stu.

    Hi

This is a very interesting read so please keep on posting.

My father joined 23rd Armd Bde in August 44 and went to Egypt and Palestine before going to Greece in November.

Stu not sure re the issue
You just copy the photos that you have of the war diary you want and paste them into the thread I do multiple photos at high res and they zip in
Click the first one then hold shift and highlight all the ones you want to copy.Copy them.
Once that is done click in the thread and paste them
Perhaps the pub wifi was not of a great speed
Also there is Patron of the site where members can weigh in with a donation if they so wish
    regards

Clive, your advise is much appreciated. Me and laptops & how they work go over my head at times. Perhaps I should get my Niece to show me what I need to do. The pub Wifi speed was spot on and Its the same speed even when I'm at home.. Not slow at all. Re the Patron thread that is about: I've made a donation in the past, and perhaps I should find it and make another donation again.

Gus, more to follow. It would be wrong of me not to complete posting the remaining pages when much time has been spent in compiling it. Its Fab. If you would like a copy of all this WD, then start a PM with me and I will gladly email it over? Its easy for me to criticize any Adjutant (who failed to do his job) and I do understand that they had other duties. Its bliss when they could be bothered to do it, and do it well. Some did not as we know.

    Regards,
    Stu.

I tried the multiple copy & paste option awhile back.
The images did not upload in the correct order so deleted them all & started again doing it one at a time.

even when you do it one at a time it takes just seconds to upload and multi uploads cant be cracked through quickly

The initial commander of B Squadron at Anzio was Captain/Major F.A. Rycroft MC, DCM, MM who was killed\died of wounds on 4th February. It appears the official OC was Major F.A.L. Samuels who was on a course in the UK.

Major R. Andrewes (listed as a 2 i/c previously) took over when Rycroft was killed. However, when Samuels returned from the UK in mid-April he became a 2 i/c and Andrewes remained as a squadron commander.

Part three of this War Diary. I've highlighted what the Commander of B Squadron needed to get off his chest at the time. Still not worked out the name of this chap. Probably need to do some more reading of THE FIELD RETURNS OF THE OFFICERS. The "Shit" farm from here on in will always be called that for me. Other regiments had different nicknames for it. Not sure if a apology was needed when it came to the nickname been given in PART II. Squadron Accounts of the Battles in my post 8. I think its Capt. Ryecroft?

Hi to all who are following this thread.

You have come up trumps again. I was kind of hoping that this chaps three citations can be shown? Would anyone mind showing them please? I do have these two files on my laptop somewhere. I was sent them ages ago from forum member James, aka Charley Fortnum.;). I think forum member Andy Newson posted them many years ago?. He probably did.

Its not every day that anyone gets to spends three days in the Anzio War Cemetery on there own. Below is his Headstone. Its Plot 4. Row A, or B ? It takes time in the sun to photo 1058 headstones over a three day period plus another day. I'm more than pleased that I've got all of them. It was taken on Thursday, 30 June, 2022 at roughly 1500 hrs. I took a picture of all of Plot 4 in about 90 minutes. Ouch. Never done so many squats in my life with a tripod. A nice pint of ale is going down well after a long week.

Gus, would you mind adding to what you have mentioned in our conversation?
