I am looking at a 2/5 Battalion Leicestershire Regt. War Diary entry for 1-7 March 1943 (Tunis Campaign) in which it refers to ......positions at Fm Montagne ....... a feature known as Fm Guessa .... I have checked most of the abbreviation lists available, but can't seen to identify what "Fm" relates to & was hoping someone might be able to assist? With thanks in advance, Dave
Farm. I checked 46th Div & Hampshire Regt histories. Found link to map after I added image. http://www.lonesentry.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/map-sidi-nsir-and-hunts-gap-tunisia-1943.jp and https://testofbattle.com/upload/bob/Hunts Gap - 50K.JPG
Owen many thanks for this, I hadn't realised such detailed maps were available, so will definitely be including them in my future research.
Good work Owen to find the location. Can I offer this as a slightly clearer map:- Béja | UCT Libraries Digital Collections Detail here:- If you use the 'View as overlay' link on the following page you can switch between the map and a satellite view, the map is the same as Owen's but the satellite view useful:- Tunisia, 1:50,000, Beja This will help you locate the area on the full map:-
Dave, 2/5 Battalion Leicestershire Regt. get a few mentions in the book The Plain Cook and the Great Showman (The First and Eighth Armies in North Africa) by Gregory Blaxland. I found it quite easily and inexpensive s/h on line. It gives a good general overview of the campaign Kassrine, Thala, Hunt's Gap and Tamera are all mentioned.
