You Americans use some weird turns of phrase. Had to google Levity, even then not sure what you mean.

Can you put that into plain English please.

    Much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply, nice to meet you. Even after so many years of Rock n Roll, we still have differences in our language.
Having worked for an American Company for several years I thought that I was bi-lingual by now.
But they were in New Jersey and California.

Levity is a perfectly normal English word in common usage.
Sorry. Just had to get that off my chest.

Ukraine. Yes. This is a thread about Ukraine.
    Back to that.
Still think Grozny/Chechnya II is the direction of travel.
More Meeja speculation this week that Putin's ill, and missing meetings/appearances, or departing meetings for unspecified medical treatment.
Wishful thinking? Dunno, but he does not look like he did fairly recently. Putting aside the Botox, he seems puffier and slightly stranger in appearance than usual.

Even if he fell, to illness or whatever, what's the outcome?
A year of some more acceptable figurehead before the kleptocracy re-affirms its control?

The main thrust from the direction of Popasna now has operational quality
There are many indications that the UA is trying to establish a new defensive front on the Bakhmut-Siversk line.
All the territories east of it seem practically not holdable any more
Much more concrete is hardly verifiable at the moment, because everything is in flux

I must confess that I had never heard of Popasna until your previous posting.
I have now located the same sources that you are using so can follow the progress of the fighting and make my own analysis.
That will not stop me looking in to see if we agree and if you don't object, might ask an occasional question or make the odd comment.

    Tom O'Brien
Before retirement I lectured (part time) in Engineering and after retirement, gave talks, mainly to retirees, regarding Early Medieval History.
If I felt that they were "losing the plot" I would often mention something controversial to encourage them sit up and ask questions.
The two most controversial battles in WW2 are to my experience, Casino and Anzio.
So you see Mr O'Brien I am not a conspiracy theorist, I just like to get an occasional reaction to my efforts.
Sorry if it made you leap for the keypad.
I appreciate the effort. Many thanks.

    In case that threw you.
I have removed my Military photos in exchange for a Fender Jazz Bass as that was another of my hobbies for many years.
After all these lock downs I am trying to be young again (and probably attention seeking).

A little bit of housekeeping if you don't mind. It's Cassino, with two 's'. ;)

Slightly off topic an article by Dr. Simon Anglim, King's War Studies, that fits here: The Review and the Army revisited: The implications of the war in Ukraine. A "taster" about what the article seeks to do:

  15. I had the same thought exactly, however, "casino" is the Italian colloquial term for "brothel" or "big mess", so not totally out of place...

Perhaps the old grey matter took a glitch. Could have sworn it was one "s " thanks for pointing it out.

Casino Royale, James Bond, never been into a casino as I am not a gambler.

So back to Ukraine. All is seemingly quiet the various institutions are seemingly in agreement mainly concentrating on the same Intelligence scenario's.
The Severodonetsk salient seems to be holding to date. Still no news of promised weaponry.
The Media are concentrating on interviews with locals and the BBC are giving reports that they just want the fighting to stop and would be happy Back in the USSR.
Is this purely tittle tattle or an attempt to distract attention while something else is brewing.
Do reports of Chinese and Russian aircraft testing Japanese airspace mean anything.
Are we becoming addicted to war news like those in WW2.
    March 1944 Anzio:
The papers may have dropped our exploits rather mournfully after we failed to live up to their original high hopes but the struggle still goes on.
They speak in the news of “no major action” and “Small local attacks on the Anzio sector but these keep us almost as busy as the big head on bust ups of earlier on. They all mean hurried fire plans, concentrations and DF’s and the guns are never silent for long. As for a good night’s sleep. ..!

  20. 721 Russian MBTs confirmed lost as of yesterday, 91st day of the Russian invasion, i.e. 121 more tanks since the 68th day. The average of around 5 tanks lost per day since the new phase of the invasion started is thus maintained. This will hopefully go up once the announced old T-62 replacements start appearing on the front lines, and/or Switchblade 600 kamikaze drones are increasingly used.
