    Hello!
    Straight to the case,
Looking for one Major John Francis Wilton Ellerton, of the Royal Artillery. Appears to be apart of the army pre-1939 and ended up post 1952.
Would be obliged for ANY information about him,
    Thanks!

No, you have begun what may be a long journey. Sometimes and there are several current threads where little was known and help from here advanced knowledge. Service Records will help, notably where and when he was posted to a unit etc.

The other factor to keep in mind is that the Royal Artillery in WW2 was a huge organization, so unless you won a notable medal, e.g. Military Cross, public records online, such as a local newspaper, are rare. Wiki refers to
    From: Royal Artillery - Wikipedia

An option is to research him from birth, education, marriage and passing - so, going forwards and backwards.

You may have spotted a more famous John Ellerton was a pre-WW1 composer of the RA's march, which comes back multiple times.

Finally, it helps to disclose what you know now, to stop duplication.

    Hi

FMP has the following text when searching through their newspapers

"Captain John F. W. Ellerton, R.A., son of F. Eller- ton, R.A., and the late Mrs. Ellerton, of Woodford Green, and Molly Matthews, W.A.A.F., daughter.... "

Supposed to be from 26 November 1941 edition of The Tatler

But when you open the link the wrong page comes up as there is no mention of Capt Ellerton.

Maybe someone else will have more luck

    Gus.

    John,

Welcome aboard, the opening post author has not logged on for a month, so I have just sent him a Private Message to return. He may have "flagged" the thread.

The OP is a schoolboy from “the land down under” (he also posts on GWF) so will likely post later today given the time difference with UK.

    WHOOPS, I forgot about this!
I never flagged it, so I never get notifications! Also I was at school earlier, racing about all over moving to my dads and so on..

Now, his son eh? Very interesting! I didn't expect that!
I came across Major Ellerton from just getting bored and researching a soldier from the British Army (since I'm more familiar with Australian Records). I usually like to research "Names out of a hat".

I was more or less researching for fun in the end. I found very little on him even if he was a Honorary Lieutenant Colonel (though he was a Major in the Army). I was going to write up a tiny biography on him but I lacked proper materials. I would still be willing to write it up if I can get a photo and/or records concerning Major Ellerton

Anyways, surprised you found this thread but it's nice to know that even his son pays attention.

Sorry if half of it doesn't make sense, it's 7:02PM and I'm exhausted,

    Tank.

Thanks for that. As I said, I am new to this site (although I have in the past read various threads) and I am a bit wary of what sort of information I should contribute to the site, and to Tank too, if you will excuse me writing that Tank. I suppose what I really mean is, should I be worried and/or careful?

Could I start by asking you,Tank, from where did you get my Dad's name, and number for that matter!

I came across your query by idly doing .... yet another ..... google search for "Ellerton Woodford" looking for info on my grandfather who happened to have helped found the Woodford Rugby Football Club 98 years ago. So if Gus had not added that Tatler snippet concerning my Mum and Dad's marriage (which mentioned Woodford) I probably would never have come across this thread.

Gus has also found that he was wounded on 12th May 1944. My Dad was out of the war, but not the army, for the rest of the duration, and he had a stiff leg for the rest of his life. He was serving with 22nd Field Regt, and was the "C.O.'s rep" in charge of all FOOs for the 10th Infantry Brigade's assault at Cassino. He had just crossed over the "Amazon" bridge that the Shiny 7 Sappers had constructed, shortly after the bridge's opening at 5.30 a.m. of 13th May. I think I remember my Dad relating that a mortar bomb blew him into the Rapido river and he was dragged out by, probably, men from 2 Beds Herts.

I am writing all ths simply because bits of this have already been mentioned, and maybe I should add now that I too, live in "the land down under" and have been here since 1969.

I've no idea how Tank found your father's name but the number came from a London Gazette entry found by davidbfpo. I edited it into the original title, to help others with research should they be inclined to contribute.

    Welcome to the forum.

That's fine. My name is Diane but I've been called plenty of other things. ;)

Although the purpose of this forum is to discuss / exchange information / commemorate those who served, etc, please don't feel in any way obliged to supply further information if you are at all uncomfortable. The majority of source material accessed here is in the public domain.
Many relatives stumble across WW2talk when conducting their own family research. No one is expected to share more than they wish to, and often it's a simple - that's my father/grandfather/uncle etc, before they move on. If any contributions by members are helpful or, if relatives chose to add anything of a more 'personal' nature such as photos, eg service summaries or accounts, then that's a bonus.
However, now that this thread has been created, it's also possible that others will add more here in the future, perhaps even relatives of those who served with your father.
