There are eleven BEF burials in Nordschote Churchyard, seven of which are East Yorks, including a 2nd Lieutenant with an MC...If he lies in this field grave then it's quite likely that the action which led to his death will be referenced somewhere.

I wonder if it is definitely British ? Can you read the name ? The caption says "Shot-down Engländer and grave on the road from Arras to Villers-Châtel 25th June 1940". Somewhere along the D431, I suppose.

I don't really recognise that as a Cheetah engine from an Anson (Were there any lost that far inland ? ) It's certainly a two-bladed prop.

That distinctive type of cowling seems to indicate a two-row radial. Something like a the Gnome-Rhône fitted to the Bloch MB150, but they all seem to have had three-bladed props. I don't have any decent French air force reference books.

Just enlarged and made the photo lighter and it`s a german plane, just shows how the info on the back can be wrong or there were two planes shot down.

    The German bi-plane Henschel Hs 123 ?
    From Wikpedia.
The Polish campaign was a success for an aircraft considered obsolete by the Luftwaffe high command. Within a year, the Hs 123 was again in action in the blitzkrieg attacks through the Netherlands, Belgium and France. General Heinz Guderian was continually impressed by the quick turnaround time offered by II.(Schl)/LG 2. Often positioned as the Luftwaffe's most-forward based combat unit, the Hs 123 flew more missions per day than other units, and again proved their worth in the close-support role. With Ju 87s still being used as tactical bombers rather than true ground support aircraft and with no other aircraft capable of this mission in the Luftwaffe arsenal the Hs 123 was destined to continue in service for some time, although numbers were constantly being reduced by attrition.

    Lehrgeschwader 2
    From Wikpedia.
The units most notable action took place at the Battle of Arras, during which a strong British armoured attack was repulsed.
Link to II. (Schl)/LG 2. One combat loss was reported on 5th June or 15th June.
