S.S. Muneric was sunk by U432 on this date. Lloyd's war losses and uboat.net say 56 crew, 2 stowaways and 5 gunners killed (though uboat.net only lists 53 crew and 3 gunners). Through the CWGC, I've identified 53 crew and three DEMS gunners (1 RN- AB WILLIAMS and 2 Army- L/Cpl DANIELS and Gnr BENTLE). So does anybody have any idea if there were additional losses or was the Lloyd's casualty report in error? Regards, Steve
All my sources come up with a figure of 56 lost - all hands. Breakdown = 36 Chinese MN, 1 Japanese MN, 16 British MN and 3 AF gunners. Some of my book sources quote 5 gunners and 2 stowaways as well including one very respected author. My worry with all those numbers though is one incorrect source being copied without proper fact checking. Another one for the last crew agreement - the list C+D from the shore copy if it has fully survived should give up more information. The file you need is official number 141905 - BT 381/1359. Regards Hugh
Thanks, I've added it to my TNA wish list. Hopefully I'll be able to see it on my visit Kew on the 21st, before my week at work. As long as the 'C' thing doesn't result in Kew shutting again or my flight being cancelled. Regards, Steve
Hi Hugh, BT381/1359 confirms the numbers onboard Muneric as 11 Officers and 42 OR crew and 3 DEMS gunners (BENTLEY, DANIELS and WILLIAMS). Regards, Steve
