I bought this rather battered wooden model this morning at a local flea market. It was cheap and I thought it might make a good restoration project. It has all the hallmarks of an souvenir made by a sailor as a present for his son.

Clearly, there is quite a lot of missing superstructure and a few missing guns and other pieces but before I start a restoration is there any chance that it is based on an actual ship? If so what?

One of the light cruiser types is my guess.

    All the best

I'd say a Town class cruiser (with a missing funnel).

I think that a Town class (1936) cruiser is a good call.

    Thank you.

Not much difference but I thought a Colony Class light cruiser. There seems to be a name on the bridge which could be Mauritius.

Town class. Distinguishing features compared to a Colony are the sloped funnel (vertical and narrower in Colony) and a forward superstructure that comes out all the way to the ship’s side (Colony class had a walkway along the hangar side).

I look forward to seeing the completed restoration. Not for the faint-hearted so good luck! Looks like it could have been bath toy?
