Citation for the Distinguished Service Order (British) Colonel James A. Van Fleet, O-3847, 8th Infantry, United States Army

For gallantry in action against the enemy on 8th June 1944, near Fresville, France. When his unit, because of severe losses of officers and men, was in need of added aggressive leadership, Colonel Van Fleet displayed such a total disregard for his own safety and calmness in the face of extremely heavy enemy fire that it was an inspiration to his men who renewed the attack with determination and confidence. Under Colonel Van Fleet's leadership his unit advanced and successfully accomplished its mission against heavy enemy resistance. The personal bravery and outstanding leadership displayed by Colonel Van Fleet are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States Army. General James A VAN FLEET Commanding General Eighth United States Army from June 1951 to date was responsible for the operational direction for the First British Commonwealth Division in KOREA during this period. Throughout this time his competence, energy and sympathetic understanding of Commonwealth problems materially assisted the operations of the Division against the common enemy. General VAN FLEET earned the respect and admiration of all Commonwealth soldiers by his resolution and steadfastness in the face of an enemy of vastly superior numbers. All Commonwealth countries are indebted to General VAN FLEET whose conduct of operations has at all times been a credit to himself and the United States and the United Nations Forces.
