I had a look at this and out of all of the England players I have to confess to have never heard of `Brian Labone` . Googled him and found he was selected for the World Cup 1966 squad but dropped out because it clashed with his wedding . An Everton player ,one club man. Brian Labone collapsed in the street (24th April 2006) following a fans presentation night and died aged 66. Apologies to all Everton fans for my ignorance of this player. Kyle
I am very sorry to hear that Roger Hunt is gone. It's kind of appropriate that his passing should follow so soon after Greaves' death. The two men were the yin and the yang of England's forward line in '66. Greaves was brilliant but never seems to have meshed entirely with Ramsey. Hunt was yet another of the quiet, hard-working types Ramsey liked, a man who never got much credit from the critics but who got the job done nonetheless. Greaves was red-hot on the Scandinavian friendly tour just before the cup, but went flat in the first round. Hunt, by contrast, caught fire, scoring three essential goals to put England through. Roger was apparently a very modest sort, no nasty, gaudy stories or star trip whatsoever. Poor Geoff and George, they must be feeling very lonely after the toll these last couple years have taken.
Not to forget England’s greatest player in my lifetime, Sir Bobby Charlton, who lost his brother Jack just over 1 year ago.

So, so sad, an immense loss. Struck a shot so sweetly, simply the best, and an Englishman people around the world famously always seemed to have heard of, “I’m from England.” “Ahh, si, Bobby Charlton”. Rest well, Sir Bobby, thank you so very much for all the great goals, for all the great memories.
R.I.P Sir Bobby, last of the Busby Babes. Grew up watching him play, fabulous player and goal scorer. A nice man, too.

Blimey, I’d not even realised we’d lost him Steve, although my dear old mum passed away just ten days before George, so I was a bit out of things at the time. The “only” major trophy he ever won in his career. Not a bad little trinket eh .
Not a bad medal to have if it's your only one, is it. I was terribly saddened that I missed his passing and had not recognised it on the this thread.
I thought that the news of Franz Beckenbauer's death would sit comfortably in this thread, amongst some of the men he admired the most in football and of course they him: 'The friend of Pele & Moore and a footballing legend'

And whilst we mourn the passing of yet another great, may I also mention how sad I am to learn of the passing of yet another, albeit in another sport - Welsh rugby and sideburns legend, J. P. R. JPR was an unbelievably great sportsman. Not many people get to be known by just their initials alone, says everything you need to know I would suggest. I played rugby for my school in the late 1970's and our teacher, Mr. Rocky was a proud Welshman and forced us to watch the 5 Nations matches each year, knowing full well Wales would win. It wasn't until my last year at school that England finally won the Grand Slam under the captaincy of Billy Beaumont, that we had the chance to tease Mr. Rocky about his beloved Wales!!
