According to writing on back these soldiers where best at shooting in battalion and won the Ceylon or Leyton Cup.

Anyone ever heard of this cup? Presume it's one in the picture.

Picture has mark saying taken in Subathu, India (outer frame says Lucknow, india) - what would they be doing there in 1905?

    Cheers

Subathu (now Sabathu) and Lucknow are both in the Northern Indian State of Himachal Pradesh.

Sabathu is now the centre of the 1st & 4th Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army. British Military Expeditions used to go to Greater Sabathu to recouperate.

I don't have exact dates, but at some time between the end of the Second Boer War in 1902 & outbreak of WW1, both the 1st and 2nd Bn Gloucester Regiments were stationed in India.

For background information about Subathu, see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page of that name

The regiment would have been performing garrison duties in India, training to maintain fitness for fighting, in the event there was an invasion into India by a power from outside India, and also providing internal security if there was civil unrest within India. At the outbreak of the First World War, around 30% of the British Army was based in India.
