Nice photos Keith but I would imagine programme was a lot of old ground for most 1940 'enthusiasts' .
Note it is being packaged as a schools programme , hope a new generation don't think 'Hitler saved the BEF '.

I found the lady who as a baby was saved from the Lancastria sinking story interesting .
Not least because in the 1990s I remember a family friend Ron Hall who was on the Lancastria when it sank saying he had helped to save a baby who was in a cot that a few of them kept above water . Maybe the same lady.

At least they put the French in as well. I thought the baby who was saved, was good too. THE SECRET HISTORY OF WORLD WAR 2 . Dunkirk. Quote [ hope a new generation don't think 'Hitler saved the BEF '.]
some think it helped a bit. I think it was hard to know, what to keep out of the programme. I should have sent a photo of British troops Drinking water out of a bowl and you can see one knocked over.
The programme was just about some of the secrets , i must have have over 1500 photos at least on the BEF in 1940 and over 4,000 in all from ww1 to the 1950s. I think us lot who on this forum could make a good programme or two.

The programme did not give the background of the baby who was rescued. I think her civilian parents may have a connection with Fairy Aviation (Belgium) which with a core of British aviation manpower were building the Battle aircraft under licence at Ghent for the Belgium Air Force. A number of the British staff of the Belgium Fairy company were known to be at St Nazaire for evacuation from there and were caught up n the Lancastria incident.

As regards the happenings as St Valery en Caux, I note that Sean Longden had an input on the programme. His "Dunkirk. The Men they Left Behind" is very informative on the subject and outlines the brutality that British POWs had to endure in the forced marches into captivity.

For the loss of HMT Lancastria, may I commend the collected first hand accounts of survivors in The Loss of Lancastria , John L West ed. Millgate pub, Bury 1988. West was also a survivor.

John West's publication is a first class account of the those who lived to tell of the ordeal. I think it came about through the Lancastria Association which used to have a memorial and wreath laying ceremony at Pornic Cemetery on 17 June each year.

Down the Atlantic Coast as far as the Charente Maritime. local cemeteries are the resting place of many victims, both known and unknown all date of death recorded as 17 June 1940.

I found it interesting to follow by Michelin map, the various routes in detail that units and stragglers made to arrive at St Nazaire from their personal accounts.

Pete Mulley. I don't quite follow you. These men in Ark Force at Le Havre were a long way from St Nazaire where the Lancastria went down.

The ship /boat they are on is at Le Harve its not cherburg it some times gets listed as being cherburg but its wrong the correct details about the photo being taken at le harve are listed in a book which mentions the evacuation of arc force and the date of the photo ,the boat they are on in the photo did not sail back to england when it did sail it sailed along the french coast untill it got to St Nazaire

Pete Mully- always nice to hear someone with a direct connection to the 1940 photos and to put a name to the men. Particularly on such a well known and many times published photo.
