    Hello Becky,

Regarding the Lake Trasimeno battles in June '44, you might like to buy my book the Liberation of Lake Trasimeno

I have attached four pages from the War Diary, Catalogue number The National Archives WO 170/1446. You will need a Perugia Map to accompany them - CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD IT .

    Regards

The first port of call to research a serviceman must be his official service records, these are only available from the MOD
Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

His number indicates that he enlisted with the General Service Corps (not unusual) before being posted to a regiment. Do you know for certain that he was with the 5th Bn, perhaps you have some other information that confirms this. He is not mentioned in the casualty lists that give the names of wounded or missing soldiers.

The map from the file for the above WD. Unfortunately the size limits (px not MB) in files prevents me posting a more useable file.

I'm being fussy but will just have to correct some of these spellings...I did live near here for 20 years and my husband was born in Castiglione del Lago....

    River Spina
    Panicale
    Tavernelle
    Paciano
    Città della Pieve

How they could NOT put Sanfatucchio on the map I cannot imagine (don't tell the Irish Brigade!!)

Here's the map I used in my other book The Trasimene Line. June-July 1944 (Uguccione Ranieri di Sorbello, Perugia)

Hi Becky, sorry but just came across your post at random. you may have seen this already by now but I have attached them anyway. Your grandad's name and address in the Northants 5th Bn address book. It shows him in S Coy and if you have a record of the Bn history in Italy you can follow him where S Coy is mentioned.
    Best regards - Steve
