I am trying to track down these two war diaries without success at the moment. My dad was posted to these two companies between jan 1944 and Sept 1945. On 11th June he landed in Normandy on the Canadian landing beaches with the 709 GT Coy. He was a driver and later a motorcycle despatch rider. Any help or advice greatly appreciated in locating these diaries.
Try these for 709GT Company WO166/13184 WO171/2518 WO171/6337 However, a search for 124 Coy seems to bring up a unit operating in Burma so I draw a blank on that one.
Thanks for the guidance on these and will definitely look them up the next time I go to the NA. Much appreciated. The 124 Coy apparently transported petrol/diesel around in France and my Dad was assigned a position there in Aug 1945 according to his service records before he embarked for Egypt to be part of the GHQ 02EME for about a year. I'll keep looking for info on that.
Hi, It looks like 124 was a D.I.D. unit. Don’t think there was a 124 GT Coy. The War Diaries that I could find listed are : WO War Office: Central Mediterranean Forces, (British Element) WO 170/2173, Royal Army Service Corps. Detail Issue Depots: 124 D.I.D., 01/01/1944, 31/12/1944 WO 170/5991, Royal Army Service Corps. Detail Issue Depots: 124 D.I.D. 01/01/1945, 31/12/1945 WO 170/8456, Royal Army Service Corps. Detail Issue Depots: 124 D.I.D, 01/01/1946, 31/01/1946 Regards Danny
Hi Richard, Just seen your request for info on the 709 Company RASC - I have the diary for 1944 if you are interested. My grandfather served with them so I'd be interested in swapping info if you have any? I have a few photos of him as well. Cheers Tim
