Hi, Sorry if there is a thread on this elsewhere but I have a simple question, what book should I read as an initial introduction to the Second World War? I am starting out as a complete beginner! Many thanks, Steve G
Welcome to the forum Think about what you know now about WW2 Then search on this forum it will then give you a base info platform then it will take you elsewhere and so on Unfortunately once you start there is no stopping and you will need to live a thousand lifetimes to get through it but dont let that stop you a lot of very good people on this forum ask any questions and you will get many answers regards Clive
Hi, Thankyou TD, Owen and Clive. I know barely anything about the Second World War other than a few key dates and campaigns. I’ve started looking at the Second World War dead on the Canterbury War Memorial and know hardly anything about the units and actions. Looking forward to engaging with the forum. Steve G
Well done Steve Re the memorial if you take a WW2 casualty name then use Find War Dead | CWGC to find the casualty that gives you a good start. NB:you are not alone mate we are all still learning regards Clive
Is there a significance in your Avatar? If so see: HMS Royal Oak (as cap tally): HMS Royal Oak, British battleship, WW2 HMS Calcutta: HMS Calcutta, British light cruiser, WW2 Tim
Hi, Thanks Tim, I’ll watch one tonight. As for the avatar, that’s my nan’s favourite uncle James Markham. He died onboard HMS Calcutta. Thankyou for the links! Cheers Clive for the advice! Steve G
It’s also showing daily at 5pm on the Yesterday TV Channel. Although you’ve already missed a few episodes, they frequently rerun the whole series from start to finish.
Hi Wobbler, Thankyou for pointing this out. I went on there and downloaded an UKTV app and you can watch all the episodes from Yesterday TV on there. Steve G
I always forget about them there new fangled App gizmo thingies. Two other channels that I think provide some excellent documentaries are PBS America (Freeview 84, Freesat 155, SKY 174). Today, for example, you can watch Desert War: Alamein at 3.55pm, amongst a few other WW2-related programmes. Schedule | PBS America | UK The other is the Smithsonian Channel (Freeview 56, Freesat 175, SKY 171/889). It also shows many interesting WW2 programmes in its schedules. One series you really should catch, as they rerun it quite regularly, is Pacific War In Color - in my humble opinion, absolutely outstanding.
Wobbler, That is brilliant, thankyou! I will crack on with watching these when doing nights. I didn't know of these channels so thankyou for the recommendation. Many thanks, Steve G
