I have been struggling for days with one, mainly because I can read neither the name or the address and have been relying on guess work.

The name appears to read: Mr B.S. Bad...... or Mr B.S. Ban.....

I have found the following individuals but none seem to fit the bill.
Bernard S Banks. Born 1921, Wandsworth
Bernard S Bannister. Born 1923, Birmingham
Brian S Banting. Born 1924, West Hampstead
Bernard S.N. Band. Born 1924 Steyning, Sussex. Known to have served as 2329481 Royal Corps of Signals.

The medals were issued by the Royal Engineers Record Office, Brighton, Sussex.

The address appears to read 193 Hounslow? Road, Hounslow, Middlesex but I think that I am not reading the name of the road correctly.

If anyone could decipher the name and the address, I would be very pleased.

If it is a Hounslow address it could be the Hanworth Road, which is a long and major road in the borough.

Thank you for the heads up. I will check the 1939 register.

His surname looks to end yton/gton/yer/ger thjere is something that drops below the line at the end of his surname - and it seems to start B?db but unsure about that so have been looking for surnames such as

    Boddington
    Biddinger
    Beddington

Just some ideas - still looking

I don't know the Hounslow area but if 193 Hanworth Road, Hounslow comes under Heston and Isleworth, then no one lived at that address in 1939. I am not sure how the numbering system worked though, if the road is a long one there might have been a 193 Hanworth Road, Heston and a 193 Hanworth Road Hounslow.

The electoral rolls available on line only go as late as 1932 so I cannot work around it by using the names of other people in the street to see who lived there after the war.

191 Hanworth Road appears to have been a public house. This is from the 1932 Electoral Roll.

I tried putting the first three letters of various combinations and an asterisk in the surname section of the FreeBMD birth search and
the letter B as the first name. I put the date parameters as 1900-1925 and narrowed the county to Middlesex. Once the search was completed, I picked out out the male names beginning with B that had a second name beginning with S.

Do you think this man fits the bill

    1939 England and Wales Register

    Name: Benjamin S Bedborough
    Gender: Male
    Marital Status: Single
    Birth Date: 25 Apr 1912
    Residence Year: 1939
    Address: 189
    Residence Place: Twickenham, Middlesex, England
    Occupation: Progress Clerk ?? & Aircraft ?

Initials are B & S - his surname starts Bed but then from the box the next letter looks like a backward d which makes it a b and towards the end of his name there is the g which hangs down below the line. In 1939 he is working in the right area married in 1940 so after the war returned to where he was

Birth 23 Apr 1916 Wantage, Berkshire, England

Indeed, but I was trying to do it in bite sized chunks, I was then going to try married in Middlesex, Died in Middlesex before moving the parameters.

Certainly a possibility worth investigating further. What we need is a link to the address that the medals were sent to though. as presumably that was his forwarding address when he left the army. It could of course be the name and address of his next of kin, as without the medal entitlement slip we do not if the medals were sent to the Royal Engineer or his next of kin. I will try a search on the CWGC website.

Many thanks for your efforts so far.

There are three WW2 casualties listed on the CWGC website as having a connection with Hanworth Road, Heston & Isleworth, all killed as the result of air raids.

There are only four houses listed on Harmondsworth Road, but there is an occupied number 193 Hammersmith Road, Hammersmith.

The 1939 Electoral Roll shows different numbers to the 1932 Roll, there is now Charles Edward & Margaret BUCKINGHAM at 193 Hanworth Road.

I have tried to track them down in the 1939 Register, but no luck.

From the 1939 Register in post 5 it seems that part of Hanworth Road is shops and businesses with at 187 a newsagent and 203-205 a cofectioner & tobacconist.

This is the 1939 entry for The Grey Hound public house. There is one son listed Douglas BACKHOUSE born 1921. The parents Alfred Thomas & Rose E (nee Baddams) married in Willesden in 1912. Alfred was then a Metropolitan Policeman & in 1939 is a police pensioner.

    Tony,

many thanks, that was the proof that I needed to confirm T.D.'s original suggestion. I have really enjoyed watching this thread evolve and I appreciate all the help that I have been given. I was clearly going round in circles and would have continued to do so without everyone's help.

    Simon.
