Reading "Tunisian Tigers," about the Tiger tanks at the peak of the fighting in Tunisia from February to April 1943. I took this one after reading "Tiger 131" in the same series. "Tunisian Tigers" contains the battle of Djebel Djaffa, which was once mistakenly reported as the battle in which Tiger 131 was captured, but was actually where a Tiger was captured that ended up in America. I'm pretty sure you are doing the same just to check that your latest book 'Theirs the Strife' is as brilliant as people are saying. All those yummy maps on superb glossy paper, all those beautiful photographs etc etc etc. Sorry John. Couldn't resist
I wondered who that was peering in through our windows. Now I know! Very perspicacious of you, but at least I haven’t advertised the fact that I’m glued to my riveting read! Thanks for the plug - what are your Bacs details?!
Not advertised? I think you just - totally justifiably - did. Book Review - Theirs the Strife - John Russell
Re 'Theirs The Strife', How do I get a copy? It's unavailable at Amazon and Helion list it as out of print! Will there be a second print run, I do hope so!
14/264 - help is at hand! Helion is reprinting the book in soft cover and hopefully it should be available at the end of this month (January 2021) through their website: Theirs the Strife | Military History Book | Helion & Company. Use the link to register interest and they will contact you when the book is available. It will be purchasable through Amazon, Waterstones etc but later in the year. Best wishes. John
JDKR - Thank you! I've registered my interest and look forward to the publication. Shame I missed out on the hardback edition, though, I much prefer hardbacks to paperbacks. Does that make me a book snob?
Name, rank serial number a dog-tag compendium including the Forgotten army dog-tags. I know there is a thread on here featuring the author who had some questions posed as to the Forgotten army dog-tags...I’m only on page16 so early days.
“The Conquering Tide” War in the Pacific Islands, 1942-1944 by Ian W. Toll. Volume II of the Pacific War trilogy. A New York Times bestseller. Highly recommend.
This just arrived yesterday. I'd been waiting for its release and it moved to the top of the read pile. Hobbs was Curator of the Fleet Air Arm museum and has written a number of excellent books on British carrier warfare. Covers early operations (besides Taranto) as well as looking at land based detachments. The development of tactics is covered as well as operational history. Looks very promising from a first skim through.
Hello Orwell1984, are there many references to Eric "Winkle" Brown in the index/contents? Many thanks in anticipation and kind regards, always, Jim.
Just had a quick look and only two references. One is his comparison of the characteristics of the Cr.42 and the Fulmar.
Believe it or not, I took a break but will return to the Conquering Tide. Sometimes after two thirds through, I break and go back. I saw this at an outlet, brand new, no less and bought it. A short read. On page 72, excellent storytelling. I was not aware he wrote A Night To Remember, about the Titanic sinking from which they made the 1950’s movie.
Nice to see that it's been reprinted. I think I read a library copy - and it was good as the recommendations here for it.
