I hope Mavis that as a registered member of the RAF Commands site that you will add a comment to clear up the confusion on the link or at least notify them of the findings so they can investigate and revise if necessary Sergeant E C GREGORY (531027), Royal Air Force) [Royal Air Force WW2 Casualty ] TD
Hello, hope you’re well. I am Eric Charles Gregory’s great granddaughter, Ellie Gregory. My grandad (Eric’s son) has passed away this week and we found all the information about Eric hidden in his wardrobe including letters from a German man who found his crashed plane. I am fascinated by his life and the interest he’s still causing nearly 100 years later. Thanks for sharing what you know !
Hi Ellie Welcome to the forum - sorry for the loss of your grandfather If you feel its relevant in the future when you are more settled perhaps you can use this thread to explain further about Eric. We have a number of members who are either German or can speak German in case you need any help in translating any documents or letters, unless you speak it yourself of course One thing you may want to do is obtain his service records and they are only available from the MOD and the forms for that are here Request records of deceased service personnel , you wont need a death certificate (as requested on the forms) but if you go to his CWGC file Casualty Details | CWGC scroll down and download the certificate on the left hand side and use that instead TD
Hello TD and welcome Ellie, So sorry for your loss, I have written the story of your great Grandfather, Eric Charles Gregory it's on Gregory, Eric Charles and I hope it's correct. For some reason he was not on the Hawarden WW2 War Memorial, so I have a list of others that I hope one day will have a plaque for them put up for them to be remembered for their sacrifice. If you have any photographs etc. I can add them on for you. TD I did write to RAF Command Forum and added that I had two newspaper cuttings, but no one has replied. Thank you for all your help once again. Kindest regards, Mavis
Hello, just had a read of the research you’ve done on Eric, he had a son (Bryan Gregory - my grandfather and his birthday was the 8th November not the 9th) who was 2 when his father died. I’m limited on the knowledge of family tree etc as my grandad was a very private person but I know his mum struggled with the loss, they were married in 1940 and he died a year later. Her name was Frieda Gregory. The German man who found the plane crash wrore Frieda multiple letters and I’ve read them all today they’re upsetting but amazing. His story is very tragic, his parachute failed him I believe and my grandads family Thought he was a prisoner of war for many months.
Thank you for replying so swiftly, I will message you privately and give you my email address so I can send you my notes and documents I have collected. Sorry about the date of birth, I got that from a newspaper cutting which is on his page. I will contact you. Kindest regards, Mavis
Don’t worry re date of birth, me and my dad have just found that it was actually printed in the newspaper as 9th! Crazy! Unless my grandad lied his whole life about his birthday this is all very fascinating to me thank you for taking the time to share this information! I will be getting copy’s of all Eric’s documents and the letters from Mr Sars the man who’s written to Frieda multiple times soon, they’re still in their original format right now so too delicate to copy
Sorry just about seeing this - It appears there is an error in the "Query" that connects the CWGC database with the Awards database. It has been fixed temporarily.
Thanks again, Jagan, have 2 newspaper cuttings that would help clarify the two different Eric Charles GREGORY.
