Don't be worrying at all....it had been a while since I'd last been on this forum because I was busy trying to research my Paternal family tree which is further complicated when your great Grandmother marries twice and there's a half family connection to take into consideration too! Plus have been working away on the Inniskilling Diaries, so will have more time on my hands to read All Hell on the Irrawaddy. Have Amazon prime so will take a look.

    Thanks for the suggestion....much appreciated!

  2. Dear Denise,
We are under Covid-19 lockdown of sorts here in Melbourne. This has given me time to take another look at this website.Thank you so much for your postings, and the kind offer of assistance. You are right, your grandfather is likely to have be a mate of my dad. I will take a look at WW2 BURMA RESEARCH. I think that my nephew, Daniel McGInley, may also be a memeber.
    Regards,
    Francis

  3. I finally found our photo of the 1st Bn Inniskillings Officers and Sergeants. The date is faded, but I am fairly sure it is 1 August 1944. I believe it was taken in Cawnpore (I can read the first few letters and I know from his service records that he was there at that time). On the reverse side of the photo, my father began writing the names of people in the back row, but he only managed to get a few down. The faces are very clear for anyone searching for a family member. Hi, I've been helping my friend Nick Clare research his family history and his uncle Charles Henry Clare served with the Royal Inniskillings Fusiliers, in the 1st Battalion (D company). He was reported missing in April 1943 and presumed killed. Thank you so much for all the information shared in this thread, I'm going to share it all with my friend. He asked if I would share these photos of Charlie with you that we found in his old family files. He signed up in 1940 so these photos will be taken at some point between them and April 1943. Thanks again.

  5. Thanks very much for these photos, Katie and Nick. Unfortunately, I don't know which company my dad was in. It looks as if our photos were taken in the same general area. I imagine you have read the accounts in these pages of what happened in Burma in early 1943, and in particular, on 6 April. If I come across any material that could help you, I will let you know. Good luck with your research. Thanks again.

    Hi Francis

Just seeing this now. My Grandfather Emerson McCarron had been sent to Ranchi with Malaria and a foor injury after the Inniskillings 2nd campaign in Burma.

He was was 1 of less than 100 men out of 600 with the 1st Batt who made it back safely from Burma, 6wks on foot and 500 miles from memory.

He was later sent back to Lisanelly Barracks, Omagh. Malaria was a recurrent feature although he continued for 21yrs in Regulars 1933 to 54 and in the 5th Bn Royal Inniskillings TA just prior to it's amalgamation into the Royal Irish in the mid 60s.

Something I thought I'd mention....prior to the ww2 he was posted in Waziristan with The Skins. I have a few photos of that time....Pith hats, horses, gun carriages etc. Although know very little so far about that time.

    Kind regards
    Denise
